DNHY 1317 - Pain Control for the Dental Hygienist Lab

Credit Hours: 1.00


Prerequisites: DNHY 1210 , DNHY 1212 , DNHY 1214  and DNHY 1215  all with grade C or better.

Corequisites: BIOL 1400 , DNHY 1314 , DNHY 1315 , DNHY 1316 , DNHY 1318  and DNHY 1319  

This course explores a working knowledge of practical applications of the various physical, chemical, and psychological modalities intended for pain and anxiety management. Students acquire an in-depth understanding of various administration techniques for local anesthesia and nitrous oxide in the dental clinical setting.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to explain anesthesia utilized in dental hygiene.

Objectives:

  1. Explain pharmacological properties, actions, considerations, and contraindications of local anesthetic agents.
  2. Explain pharmacological properties, actions, considerations, and contraindications of vasoconstrictors.
  3. Explain pharmacological properties, actions, considerations, and contraindications of nitrous oxide.

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to select appropriate methods to control pain.

Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate methods to address patient anxiety.
  2. Demonstrate uses for topical and noninjectable anesthetics. 
  3. Explain pain/impulse conduction related to nerve anatomy and physiology. 
  4. Identify intraoral landmarks involved in the administration of local anesthetics. 

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to select an analgesia method based on a patient’s needs.

Objectives:

  1. Summarize pain control techniques according to legal and ethical standards and state board regulations. 
  2. Summarize the different local and systemic complications from the administration of local anesthesia.
  3. Summarize management of local and systemic complications from the administration of local anesthesia.
  4. Demonstrate use of items in local anesthesia armamentarium.

Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will utilize professional behaviors in accordance to the Dental Hygiene Practice Act.

Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate HIPAA compliance in health care.
  2. Demonstrate accurate documentation of clinical findings.
  3. Demonstrate accurate documentation of patient services.
  4. Explain the ADHA Code of Ethics.
  5. Demonstrate professionalism as it relates to the practice of dental hygiene.
  6. Demonstrate management techniques for medical emergencies that occur in the dental practice.
  7. Demonstrate permitted functions for dental hygienists in the State of Michigan.
