Corequisites: DNHY 1210 , DNHY 1212 , and DNHY 1215
This course continues to advance the dental hygiene theory, radiographic, and clinical concepts of the previous semester. Students will interact with case studies involving the following: infection control, PPE, radiography and radiologic principles, patient and professional communication, oral hygiene education products and strategies, recall/recare, and dental referrals.

Objectives:
- Explain the chain of events required for the spread of infectious disease.
- Explain tthe common methods of cross-contamination.
- Explain common transmissible diseasees that may pose a risk to patients and dental healthcare personnel.
Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to summarize infection prevention.

- Explain the PPE necessary for dental hygiene treatment procedures.
- Explain the methods of disinfection.
- Explain the methods of instrument sterilization.
- Explain common dental equipment maintenance procedures.

- Identify the proper use of sickle scalers.
- Identify the proper use of Gracey curets.
- Identify the proper use of dental mirrors.
- Identify the proper use of periodontal probes.
- Identify the proper use of dental explorers.
Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to summarize the significance of obtaining a patient’s relevant background information.

- Explain the relationship between oral conditions and a patient’s general health.
- Explain how dental procedures may complicate existing physiologic conditions.
- Explain how general health factors influence response to treatment.
- Explain why the medical history must be updated continually.
Outcome 5: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the common patient assessments in dentistry.

- Demonstrate the steps in collecting patient’s occlusion.
