DNHY 1116 - Dental Anatomy/Histology Theory

Credit Hours: 2.00


Prerequisites: Admission into the Dental Hygiene Program; ENGL 1181  or ENGL 1210 BIOL 2710 BIOL 2400  OR BIOL 2730 PSYC 1010 CHEM 1050 , and SOCY 1010  all with grade of C or better

Corequisites: DNHY 1112 DNHY 1117 , DNHY 1118 , DNHY 1119 , DNHY 1120  and DNHY 1121

This course explores prenatal development; the development, histological and anatomical characteristics, and developmental disturbances of human primary and permanent teeth; and the anatomical features and functions of oral tissues and of the head and neck. Students acquire in-depth understanding of embryology, oral histology, dental anatomy, the anatomy of the head and neck, and their relationship to dental hygiene clinical practice.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to explain the process of embryologic development of the face and oral cavity.

Objectives:

  1. Explain the processes of tooth development.
  2. Explain the processes of cranial development.
  3. Compare the histologic structure of hard and soft tissues in the oral cavity.
  4. Explain the impact of histologic structure on disease processes.
  5. Explain impacts of histologic structure on clinical treatment procedures.

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to identify the various structures of the head and neck.

Objectives:

  1. Identify the bones of the cranial vault and facial skeleton.
  2. Identify the general surface features of the of the skull.
  3. Identify the structural organization of the neurocranium.
  4. Identify the cervical vertebrae.

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to compare the skeletal muscles of the head and neck.

Objectives:

  1. Identify the landmarks of the superficial face.
  2. Identify the muscles of facial expression.
  3. Identify the actions of the muscles of facial expression.
  4. Identify the innervation of the muscles of facial expression.
  5. Identify the muscles of the soft palate and pharynx.
  6. Recognize the functions and innervations of the muscles of the soft palate and pharynx.
  7. Identify the structural features of the oro-, naso-, and laryngeal pharynx and larynx.
  8. Recognize the structural features of the oro-, naso-, and laryngeal pharynx and larynx.
  9. Identify the boundaries of the anterior and posterior cervical triangles.
  10. Identify the anterior and posteriors cervical subsidiary triangles.
  11. Recognize major contents of the anterior and posterior subsidiary triangles.
  12. Recognize the origin, insertion, innervation, and function of the neck muscles.
  13. Recognize the origin, insertion, innervation, and function of the facial muscles.

Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to explain anatomy of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses.

Objectives:

  1. Identify the bones of the external nose.
  2. Identify the structures of the medial and lateral walls of the nasal cavity.
  3. Identify the paranasal sinuses.
  4. Describe the functions of the paranasal sinuses.
  5. Describe the drainage of the paranasal sinuses into the nasal cavities.

Outcome 5: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to identify muscles of mastication and temporomandibular joint.

Objectives:

  1. Identify the boundaries of the temporal and infratemporal fossae.
  2. Identify the primary and secondary muscles of mastication.
  3. Identify the origins and insertions of the primary and secondary muscles of mastication.
  4. Identify the innervations of the primary and secondary muscles of mastication.

Outcome 6: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to identify the landmarks of the mouth.

Objectives:

  1. Identify the muscles that form the floor of the mouth.
  2. Identify the actions and innervation of the muscles forming the floor of the mouth.
  3. Identify the components of the teeth.
  4. Identify the teeth in the primary and permanent dentition.
  5. Identify tooth surfaces and their relationships to the surrounding tissues.
  6. Identify the extrinsic and intrinsic muscles of the tongue.
  7. Describe the function and innervation of the extrinsic and intrinsic muscles of the tongue.

Outcome 7: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to distinguish between the extrinsic and intrinsic salivary glands.

Objectives:

  1. Identify the structure of the extrinsic salivary glands.
  2. Identify the structure of the intrinsic salivary glands.
  3. Identify the function of saliva.
