This course explores prenatal development; the development, histological and anatomical characteristics, and developmental disturbances of human primary and permanent teeth; and the anatomical features and functions of oral tissues and of the head and neck. Students acquire in-depth understanding of embryology, oral histology, dental anatomy, the anatomy of the head and neck, and their relationship to dental hygiene clinical practice.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to explain the process of embryologic development of the face and oral cavity.
Objectives:
- Explain the processes of tooth development.
- Explain the processes of cranial development.
- Compare the histologic structure of hard and soft tissues in the oral cavity.
- Explain the impact of histologic structure on disease processes.

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to compare the skeletal muscles of the head and neck.

- Identify the landmarks of the superficial face.
- Identify the muscles of facial expression.
- Identify the actions of the muscles of facial expression.
- Identify the innervation of the muscles of facial expression.
- Identify the muscles of the soft palate and pharynx.
- Recognize the functions and innervations of the muscles of the soft palate and pharynx.
- Identify the structural features of the oro-, naso-, and laryngeal pharynx and larynx.
- Recognize the structural features of the oro-, naso-, and laryngeal pharynx and larynx.
- Identify the boundaries of the anterior and posterior cervical triangles.
- Identify the anterior and posteriors cervical subsidiary triangles.
- Recognize major contents of the anterior and posterior subsidiary triangles.
- Recognize the origin, insertion, innervation, and function of the neck muscles.
- Recognize the origin, insertion, innervation, and function of the facial muscles.
Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to explain anatomy of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses.
Objectives:
- Identify the bones of the external nose.
- Identify the structures of the medial and lateral walls of the nasal cavity.
- Identify the paranasal sinuses.
- Describe the functions of the paranasal sinuses.
- Describe the drainage of the paranasal sinuses into the nasal cavities.
Outcome 5: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to identify muscles of mastication and temporomandibular joint.
Objectives:
- Identify the boundaries of the temporal and infratemporal fossae.
- Identify the primary and secondary muscles of mastication.
- Identify the origins and insertions of the primary and secondary muscles of mastication.
- Identify the innervations of the primary and secondary muscles of mastication.
Outcome 6: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to identify the landmarks of the mouth.
Objectives:
- Identify the muscles that form the floor of the mouth.
- Identify the actions and innervation of the muscles forming the floor of the mouth.
- Identify the components of the teeth.
- Identify the teeth in the primary and permanent dentition.
- Identify tooth surfaces and their relationships to the surrounding tissues.
- Identify the extrinsic and intrinsic muscles of the tongue.
- Describe the function and innervation of the extrinsic and intrinsic muscles of the tongue.
Outcome 7: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to distinguish between the extrinsic and intrinsic salivary glands.

- Identify the structure of the extrinsic salivary glands.
- Identify the structure of the intrinsic salivary glands.
- Identify the function of saliva.
