DNHY 1112 - Principles of Dental Hygiene Credit Hours: 2.00 Prerequisites: Admission into the Dental Hygiene Program; ENGL 1181 or ENGL 1210 , BIOL 2710 , BIOL 2400 or BIOL 2730 , PSYC 1010 , CHEM 1050 , and SOCY 1010 all with grade of C or better
Corequisites: DNHY 1116 , DNHY 1117 , DNHY 1118 , DNHY 1119 , DNHY 1120 and DNHY 1121
The student will be introduced to the dental hygiene profession. Issues including patients’ rights, professional ethics, the state practice act, health promotion, and communication will be presented. Learning styles, test taking strategies, research applications, using resources, and writing styles will be included.

- Identify the characteristics of effective manual and power toothbrushes.
- Explain common toothbrushing methods.
- Explain the different modes of action of power toothbrushes.
- Explain proper care of manual and power toothbrushes.
- Explain the adverse effects of improper toothbrushing.
- Explain the types of dental floss.
- Explain the steps for use of floss.
- Explain the commonly used floss aids.
- Explain the commonly used interdental aids.
Outcome 5: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to explain the purpose of dentifrices.

- Explain the active and inactive components in dentifrices.
- Identify the mechanism of action for preventive and therapeutic agents in dentifrices.
- Identify patient specific dentifrice recommendations.
- Explain the role of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
- Explain the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance.

- Recognize the active and inactive components in mouth rinses.
