Corequisites: DNHY 1212 , DNHY 1214 , and DNHY 1215
This course includes a study of basic oral histology and embryology with an in-depth study of the anatomy and histology of the periodontium and changes that occur in the presence of disease processes. Pathogenesis and etiology of periodontal diseases and mechanisms of tissue destruction are also emphasized. Clinical management of periodontal patients is covered.

Objectives:

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to assess abnormal tissues of the periodontium.

- Explain tissue changes, bacterial distribution, and clinical presentation of gingivitis.
- Explain the etiology of gingivitis
- Explain the etiology of periodontitis.
- Explain tissue changes, bacterial distribution, clinical presentation, and radiographic appearance of periodontal disease.
Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to explain the components of a comprehensive periodontal examination.
Objectives:
- List the instruments used for a periodontal examination.
- Explain the technique for the use of the periodontal probe.
- Explain how the procedure for the comprehensive examination is described to the patient.
Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to explain types of dental indices.
Objectives:
- Define key terms related to dental indices.
- Define key terms related to scoring methods.
- Summarize purposes for a variety of dental indices.
- List common dental indices.
Outcome 5: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to summarize a patient’s periodontal health.
Objectives:
- Explain the steps in conducting a periodontal examination.
- Explain how a periodontal treatment plan is formulated.
- Explain patient periodontal staging and grading.
- Classify a patient’s periodontal health
Outcome 6: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to identify a patient’s periodontal needs.

- Identify patient specific self-care techniques to improve/maintain periodontal health.
- Identify appropriate oral self-care techniques to improve/maintain patient’s periodontal health.
