DNHY 1318 - Dental Materials Theory

Credit Hours: 1.00


Prerequisites: DNHY 1210 , DNHY 1212 , DNHY 1214  and DNHY 1215  all with grade C or better

Corequisites: BIOL 1400 , DNHY 1314 , DNHY 1315 , DNHY 1316 , DNHY 1317 , DNHY 1319  

(replaces but does not equate to DNHY 1312)

This course includes a study of the physical and chemical properties, and the manipulation of and uses for most commonly used dental materials. The lecture component will present background information about the dental materials.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able identify the use of selected dental materials.

Objectives:

  1. Discuss the history of dental materials.
  2. Discuss the role of the ADA specifications in dental materials.
  3. Discuss the role of OSHA specifications regarding dental materials.
  4. Explain the parts of the OSHA safety data sheets.
  5. Explain the use of dental amalgam.
  6. Explain the use of composite resin.
  7. Explain the use of dental sealant materials.
  8. Explain the use of periodontal dressing.
  9. Explain the use of gingival retraction cord.
  10. Explain the use of common impression materials.
  11. Explain the use of dental stone.
  12. Explain the use of dental plaster.
  13. Explain uses for dental cements.
  14. Explain uses for common desensitizers.

Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will be able describe the responsibilities of dental professionals related to the application of dental materials.

Objectives:

  1. Discuss safety measures when utilizing common dental materials.
  2. Discuss patient safety measures when applying common dental materials.
  3. Discuss legal application of common dental materials in accordance to the State of Michigan’s scope of practice for dental hygienists.
  4. Identify legal responsibilities for the dental hygienist when utilizing dental materials in the State of Michigan.
