LNUR 2265 - Intermediate Adult Medical-Surgical Nursing Clinical

Credit Hours: 2.50


Prerequisites: LNUR 1345 , LNUR 1355 , and LNUR 1365  and grade of C or grade Pass (if course is a Pass/Fail course)

Corequisites: LNUR 2245  and LNUR 2255  

This medical-surgical clinical course exposes students to patient-care opportunities requiring critical thinking, priority to develop skills in nursing care delivery while caring for a variety of adult patients.  Using the framework of the nursing process, the Licensed Practical nursing student will practice vital thinking, communication skills, application of technology, and professional responsibility within the scope of practice while safely caring for patients with life-span changes.  This course is graded on a pass/fail basis.  Students are required to pass this course to progress in the program.

LPN Course Outcome: 

1. Upon completion of this course,the student will be able to apply the nursing process to complicatedmedical‐surgical adults in an acute setting. 

LPN Objectives: 

  1. The student will demonstrate proficiency in assessment of complicated medical-surgical adult patients.  

  1. The student will gather data from the assessment and report to the interdisciplinary team.  

  1. Under the LPN Scope of Practice, the student will calculate and administer medications to patients with medical/surgical diagnoses.  

  1. The student will complete nursing interventions safely with patients with a variety of medical/surgical diagnoses.

F. The student participates as a member of an interdisciplinary team using effective communication.  

LPN Course Outcome: 

1. Upon completion of this course, the student will use therapeutic communication techniques to communicate purposely and effectively with patients and the healthcare team in the adult medical-surgical unit.

  1. The student will document care accurately and consistently on all client records and assignments. 

  1. The student will report abnormal finds and changes in client’s condition promptly to the instructor and the RN.

COURSE CONTENT OUTLINE
 

  1. The Student will be Assigned to Care for Patients with Problems in the Following Areas:  

  1. Cardiovascular problems: myocardial infarction, angina, hypertension, chronic heart failure, valve disease, rhythm disturbances, or peripheral vascular disease 

  1. Anemia 

  1. Fluid and electrolyte problems with emphasis on patients receiving IV therapy 

  1. Renal disease 

  1. Diabetes complications 

  1. Thyroid, adrenal, parathyroid, pituitary problems 

  1. Urinary tract disorders 

  1. Others as assigned by clinical faculty 

  1. The Clinical Lab will Focus on:  

  1. Cardiac telemetry interpretation 

  1. Dressing techniques for central lines and venous access devices 

  1. Intravenous therapy review 

  1. Mock code 

  1. Simulation of patient experiencing a cardiovascular crisis
