LNUR 1365 - Introduction to Adult Medical Surgical Nursing Clinical

Credit Hours: 2.50


Prerequisites: LNUR 1245 , LNUR 1255  and LNUR 1265  all with grade C or better, or grade Pass (if the course is a Pass/Fail course) 

Corequisites: LNUR 1345  and LNUR 1355  

In this medical-surgical clinical course, students will develop skills in providing, under the supervision of the RN, care for adults who have a variety of nursing care needs. Using the nursing process, the student will continue to develop vital communication skills, application of technology, and professional responsibility within the scope of practice. Clinical experience will focus on safely caring for adult clients with body system complications. This course is graded on a pass/fail basis. Students are required to pass this course to progress in the program.

Course Outcome:

  1. Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to implement the nursing process while caring for patients with medical/surgical conditions.

Course Objectives: The student will:

  1. Continue to demonstrate growth in assessment/data collection for adult clients using the LPN scope of practice.
  2. Recognize medication drug interactions and nursing interventions related to patients with medical/surgical conditions.
  3. Under the LPN Scope of Practice, calculate and administer medications to patients with medical/surgical conditions.
  4. Complete nursing interventions safely and caring with patients with medical/surgical conditions.

F. The student participates as a member of an interdisciplinary team using effective communication.

 

Course Outcome:

  1. Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to articulate therapeutic communication techniques for the patient and family with medical/surgical conditions.

Course Objectives: The student will:

  2. Report changes in patient’s condition promptly to the instructor and interdisciplinary team.

  1. Upon completion of this course the student will be able to demonstrate the role of the licensed practical nurse while caring for patients with medical/surgical conditions.

  2. Practice within the ethical and legal framework of nursing (NALPN Scope and Standard of Practice).
  3. Promptly report unsafe, illegal, or inappropriate incidents to interdisciplinary team.
