LNUR 1265 - Introduction to Clinical Practice

Credit Hours: 1.50


Prerequisites: Admission into the Licensed Practical Nursing Program; LNUR 1145 , LNUR 1155 , LNUR 1165 , LNUR 1175  and PSYC 1010  all with grade C or better, or grade Pass (if the course is a Pass/Fail course) 

Corequisites: LNUR 1245  and LNUR 1255  

This fundamental clinical course helps students develop skills in providing nursing care, while implementing the nursing process. Students will develop problem solving, communication skills, application of technology, and professional responsibility while safely caring for adult patients. This clinical course will focus on documentation, medication administration, in accordance with the LPN scope of practice, and health assessment of the patient with a variety of medical/surgical diagnosis in various health care settings. This course is graded on a pass/fail basis. Students are required to pass this course to progress in the program.

LPN End of Program Student Learning Outcome:

D. The student can demonstrate critical-thinking problem solving by applying clinical knowledge to provide safe, culturally appropriate client, and family-centered care.

 

Course Outcome:

  1. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to use problem-solving techniques for the nursing process for adult patients with a variety of health conditions.

 

Course Objectives: In a clinical setting students will:

  1. Demonstrate competency, and in accordance with the LPN Scope of Practice, assessment and data collection.
  2. Perform patient-centered nursing interventions in a safe, effective, and timely manner.
  3. Correctly compute and safely administer medications.

 

LPN End of Program Student Learning Outcome:

F. The student participates as a member of an interdisciplinary team using effective communication.

 

Course Outcome:

  1. Upon completion of this course students will be able to articulate therapeutic communication techniques in the clinical healthcare setting.

Course Objectives: In the healthcare setting students will:

  1. Verbalize a patient’s physical/mental status to the to the interdisciplinary team.
  2. Document accurately on all client records and assignments.
  3. Therapeutically communicate and demonstrate appropriate nonverbal behavior.
  4. Communicate patient issues effectively with the interdisciplinary team.
  5. Teach patients based on identified learning needs, as directed by the interdisciplinary team.

 

LPN End of Program Student Learning Outcome:

A. The student will provide professional care within the legal scope of practice.

 

Course Outcome:

  1. Upon completion of this course students will be able to demonstrate the role of the Licensed Practical nurse in the clinical setting.

Course Objectives: Students will:

  1. Maintain confidentiality of information.
  2. Practice within the ethical and legal framework of nursing (NALPN Scope and Standard of Practice.
  3. Promptly report unsafe, illegal, or inappropriate incidents to faculty and/or staff.
  4. Maintain a professional appearance, attitude, and conduct.

      5.  Upon completion of this course, students will be able to articulate the LPN, RN and CNA’s responsibilities in the clinical site.

   1. Demonstrate the LPN role in providing patient care.

   2. Articulate the RN role in delegation of clinical tasks.

   3. Verbalizes the CNA’s role in providing patient care.
