LNUR 1155 - Fundamentals of Nursing Practice

Credit Hours: 1.50
Prerequisites: Admission into the Licensed Practical Nursing Program; ENGL 1181  or ENGL 1210 , BIOL 2400  or BIOL 2730 , BIOL 1400 , BIOL 2710 , and HHSC 1040  all with grade C or better 

Corequisites: LNUR 1145 , LNUR 1165 , and LNUR 1175  

This theory course explores fundamental health concepts. The LPN student will develop knowledge of the health-illness-wellness spectrum and knowledge of the including scope of practice of the LPN within the healthcare environment. Primary principles include incorporating competent, caring, professional values, and viewing the patient holistically through the lens of a legal/ethical framework necessary to perform basic nursing skills on the adult patient while implementing patient advocacy.

  1. The student will connect patient diagnosis and the nursing process and how evidence-based practice is used.  

  1. The student will identify and begin to apply evidence‐based practice related to diagnostic testing. 

  1. The student will identify and begin to apply evidence‐based practice with infectious diseases. 

  1. The student will begin to apply evidence‐based practice with pharmacologic principles and medication administration.

Course Outcome: Upon completion of this course:  

1. The student will identify how their role within the interdisciplinary team contributes to providing quality nursing care. 

Course Objectives: 

1. The student will collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to provide quality improvement/nursing strategies when using the nursing process. 

2. The student will recognize quality improvement/nursing strategies while communicating with patients, families, and healthcare team members. 

3. The student will collect health history data and in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team identify quality improvement/nursing strategies. 

4. The student will collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to identify quality improvement/nursing strategies for the patient with an infectious disease process. 

5. The student will follow the scope of practice and identify quality improvement/nursing strategies while preparing to administer medications in a safe manner.
