LNUR 1165 - Introduction to Clinical Skills

Credit Hours: 1.00


Prerequisites: Admission into the Licensed Practical Nursing Program; ENGL 1181  or ENGL 1210 ,BIOL 2400  or BIOL 2730 , BIOL 1400 , BIOL 2710 , and HHSC 1040  all with grade C or better 

Corequisites: LNUR 1145 , LNUR 1155 , and LNUR 1175  

This laboratory skills course focuses on the principles and skills that form the foundation for licensed practical nursing, the nursing process. This framework, emphasizing safe nursing practice, will aid the student in developing vital problem-solving and communication skills to safely care for adults of various ages. Focus is on the LPN student’s role in developing psychomotor skills, skills related to caring for a variety of adult patients with a range of medical/pharmacologic needs, and documentation of care. This course is graded on a pass/fail basis. Students are required to pass this course to progress in the program.

LPN End of Program Student Learning Outcome:

D. The student will demonstrate critical-thinking problem solving by applying clinical knowledge to provide safe, culturally appropriate client and family-centered care.

 

Course Outcome:

  1. Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to use the nursing process while caring for adults with a variety of health issues.

Course Objectives: In a simulated clinical setting the student will:

  1. Identify the nursing process in problem solving the care of adults with a variety of health issues.
  2. Demonstrate competency in accordance with the LPN Scope of Practice, assessment and data collection.
  3. Perform patient-centered, nursing interventions in a safe, effective, and timely manner.
  4. Correctly compute drug calculations.

 

LPN End of Program Student Learning Outcome:

F. The student participates as a member of an interdisciplinary team using effective communication.

 

Course Outcome:

  1. Upon completion of this course the student will be able to demonstrate therapeutic communication techniques in the simulated clinical setting.

Course Objectives: In a simulated clinical setting the student will:

  1. Verbalize a patient’s physical/mental status to the interdisciplinary team.
  2. Document accurately on all patient records and assignments.
  3. Therapeutically communicate and demonstrate appropriate nonverbal behavior.
  4. Communicate client issues effectively with the interdisciplinary team.
  5. Teach clients based on identified learning needs, as directed by the interdisciplinary team.

 

LPN End of Program Student Learning Outcome:

G. The student will demonstrate information literacy when delivering patient care.

 

Course Outcome:

  1. Upon completion of this course the student will be able to use basic technology within the simulated clinical setting.

Course Objectives: In a simulated clinical setting the student will:

  1. Perform nursing interventions safely.
  2. Utilize technology to obtain and record relevant adult patient data, including nursing care and patient response.

A. The student will provide professional care within the legal scope of practice.

 

Course Outcome:

  1. Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to demonstrate the role of the Licensed Practical Nurse in the simulated clinical setting.

Course Objectives: The student will:

  1. Practice within the ethical and legal framework of nursing (NALPN Scope and Standard of Practice).
  2. Maintain confidentiality of information.
  3. Provide care with sensitivity and respect for human diversity.
  4. Promptly report unsafe, illegal, or inappropriate incidents to the interdisciplinary team.
  5. Maintain a professional appearance, attitude, and conduct.
  6. Recognize their own limitations, seek assistance from interdisciplinary team, and assume responsibility for their own learning and professional growth.
