LNUR 1462 - Maternal/Pediatric Clinical Nursing for the LPN

Credit Hours: 0.50


Prerequisites: LNUR 2245 , LNUR 2255 , and LNUR 2265  all with grade C or better, or grade Pass (if course is a Pass/Fail course).

Corequisites: LNUR 1461 , LNUR 1447 , and LNUR 1448  

The Maternal/Pediatric lab course helps students develop skills in providing nursing care to the childbearing/childrearing family. Applying the nursing process, the student will develop problem-solving skills, communication skills, application of technology, and professional responsibility, under the scope of practice for LPNs. Lab experience will focus on safely caring for Maternity/Pediatric population. New skills emphasized during this rotation include infant assessment, supporting new families during their childbirth experience, and health concerns or disorders. This course is graded on a pass/fail basis. Students are required to pass this course to progress in the program.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
LPN End of Program Student Learning Outcome:

D. The student will demonstrate critical-thinking problem solving by applying clinical knowledge to provide safe, culturally appropriate client and family-centered care.

Course Outcome:

  1. Upon completion of this course the student will be able to use the nursing process while caring for maternal/pediatric patients in the simulated clinical setting.

Course Objectives: In a simulated clinical setting the student will:

  1. Demonstrate competence in assessment/data collection (i.e., labs, diagnostics, medications, etc.).
  2. Under the direction of the RN, implement nursing diagnoses based on assessment data.
  3. Implement interventions directed by the RN.
  4. With the RN and the patient/family, implement a plan of care that prescribes evidence-based interventions to attain identified patient outcomes.
  5. Identify drug effects and nursing interventions appropriate to the medication for assigned patients.
  6. Correctly compute and safely administer drugs.
  7. Perform nursing interventions safely, in a timely manner.
  8. Provide care with sensitivity and respect for human diversity.

 

LPN End of Program Student Learning Outcome:

F. The student participates as a member of an interdisciplinary team using effective communication.

 

Course Outcome:

  1. Upon completion of this course the student will be able to use therapeutic communication with the maternal/pediatric patient and healthcare team in a simulated scenario.

Course Objectives: In a simulated clinical setting the student will:

  1. Document accurately, completely, and consistently on all patient records and assignments.
  2. Report changes in the patient’s condition promptly to the interdisciplinary team
  3. Communicate therapeutically with the patient and family.
  4. Communicate patient care issues with other health care professionals.
  5. Under the direction of the interdisciplinary team, teach the maternal/pediatric patient and family, based on identified learning needs.

 

LPN End of Program Student Learning Outcome:

A. The student will provide professional care within the legal scope of practice.

 

Course Outcome:

  1. Upon completion of this course the student will be able to identify behaviors of the licensed practical nurse in the simulated maternity/pediatric setting.

Course Objectives: The student will:

  1. Practice within the ethical and legal framework of nursing (NALPN Scope and Standard of Practice).
  2. Promptly report unsafe, illegal, or inappropriate incidents to interdisciplinary team.
  3. Maintain a professional appearance, attitude, and conduct.
  4. Recognize their own limitations, seek assistance from interdisciplinary team, and assume responsibility for their own learning and professional growth.
  5. Be receptive to and use constructive feedback to improve performance.

 

LPN End of Program Student Learning Outcome:

G. The student will demonstrate information literacy when delivering patient care.

  1. Upon completion of this course the student will be able to use technology within the simulated maternal/pediatric healthcare setting.

5.  Course Outcome: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the LPN responsibilities in a childbearing or childrearing  in a simulated clinical site. 

Course Objectives: The student will:

       1. Demonstrate the LPN role caring for childbearing/childrearing patients in a simulated clinical site.

       2. Know the CNA’s role in caring for childbearing/childrearing patients in a simulated clinical site.

3. Know the RN’s role in caring for childbearing/childrearing patients in a simulated clinical site.
