LNUR 1448 - Geriatrics and Mental Health clinical for the LPN

Credit Hours: 1.00


Prerequisites: LNUR 2245 , LNUR 2255 , and LNUR 2265  all with grade C or better, or grade Pass (if course is a Pass/Fail course). 

Corequisites: LNUR 1447 , LNUR 1461  and LNUR 1462  

This clinical course focuses on the health and illness of clients with emotional and psychosocial difficulties and psychiatric illnesses throughout the lifespan. This course includes the importance of nurse-patient relationship and the therapeutic use of self in the clinical setting through verbal and written communication and one-on-one interactions in the role of the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Additional emphasis is placed on the LPN’s role in interdisciplinary treatment planning utilization of the nursing process and the impact of culture in the care of the aging adult and in mental health illness.  This course is graded on a pass/fail basis. Students are required to pass this course to progress in the program.

LPN End of Program Student Learning Outcome:

D. The student will demonstrate critical-thinking problem solving by applying clinical knowledge to provide safe, culturally appropriate patient and family-centered care.

 

Course Outcome:

  1. Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to demonstrate the use of the nursing process while caring for patients experiencing psychiatric/mental health problems.

Course Objectives: The student will:

  1. Demonstrate proficiency in assessment/data collection (i.e., labs, diagnostics, medications, etc.) as it pertains to the LPN scope of practice.
  2. Implement nursing diagnoses based on assessment data under the direction of the interdisciplinary team.
  3. Recognize medication drug interactions and nursing interventions related to patients with psychiatric/mental health conditions.
  4. Under the LPN scope of practice, calculate and administer medications to patients with psychiatric/mental health conditions.
  5. Perform nursing interventions safely, in a timely manner.
  6. Provide care with sensitivity and respect for human diversity.

F. The student participates as a member of an interdisciplinary team using effective communication.

 

Course Outcome:

  1. Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to articulate therapeutic communication techniques for the patient and family with psychiatric/mental health conditions.

Course Objectives: The student will:

  1. Document care accurately and consistently.
  2. Report changes in client’s condition promptly to the instructor and RN.
  3. Communicate therapeutically with the patient and family.
  4. Communicate patient-care issues with other health care professionals.

 

Course Outcome:

  1. Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to articulate therapeutic communication techniques for the patient and family with geriatric conditions.

Course Objectives: The student will:

  1. Document care accurately and consistently.
  2. Report changes in client’s condition promptly to the instructor and RN.

LPN End of Program Student Learning Outcome:

A. The student will provide professional care within the legal scope of practice.

 

Course Outcome:

  1. Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to demonstrate the role of the licensed practical nurse in the psychiatric mental health clinical setting.

Course Objectives: The student will:

  1. Maintain confidentiality of information.
  2. Practice within the ethical and legal framework of nursing (NALPN Scope and Standard of Practice).
  3. Promptly report unsafe, illegal, or inappropriate incidents to faculty and/or staff.
  4. Maintain a professional appearance, attitude, and conduct.
  5. Recognize their own limitations, seek assistance from faculty/staff, and assume responsibility for their own learning and professional growth.
  6. Be receptive to and use constructive feedback to improve performance.
