This course provides explores the anatomy, microbiological, pharmacological, assessment, and treatment practices for various special needs populations. Students acquire an in-depth understanding of the treatment approaches for patients with medical, physical, and other special considerations as well as a comprehensive review of the dental hygiene theory, concepts, and techniques taught in the preceding semesters in preparation for the written board and clinical practice.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to discuss the principles of dental hygiene utilizing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Objectives:
- Develop test taking strategies for the dental hygiene board exams.
- Construct dental hygiene board exam questions.
- Assess objective and subjective patient findings to formulate an evidenced- based, patient-centered dental hygiene diagnosis.
- Compile intervention strategies that promote and maintain oral health.
- Take part in mock board exams.
Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the systematic methodology of care.
Objectives:
- Discuss the proper use of armamentarium and equipment for providing care to all ASA patient levels.
- Discuss successful patient dental management techniques for diverse patient populations.
- Assess dental hygiene treatment plans for the prevention and or treatment of oral diseases.
- Assess the need for adjunctive topic chemotherapeutic and controlled released agents.
- Assess the need for initial and supportive periodontal therapies.
- Assess the need for pain and anxiety management strategies.
Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to discuss the general characteristics of dental practice acts.
Objectives:
- Discuss the supervision levels of the dental hygienist as defined in the Michigan Dental Practice Act.
- Compare the supervision levels of the dental hygienist as defined in the Michigan Dental Practice Act to other States.
- Discuss the dental hygiene license application process in the State of Michigan.
- Discuss how ethical theories affect ethical decision-making.
Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to apply the principles of data collection.
Objectives:
- Construct comprehensive medical history documents based on appropriate follow-up questions and medical references.
- Assess a patient’s assessments for contraindications in dental hygiene care.
- Analyze treatment modifications based on contraindications.
- Choose the correct diagnostic aids to determine and record the vital signs of a patient.
- Choose the correct technique to perform an extraoral and an intraoral examination.
- Construct documentation of clinical findings using appropriate descriptive terminology.
- Formulate the care level of a patient based on assessment data.
- Construct a dental hygiene treatment plan based on patient needs.
- Assess a patient’s periodontal health.
- Choose the appropriate diagnostic aids to chart a patient’s periodontal findings.
- Choose the appropriate diagnostic aids to chart a patient’s supra and subgingival calculus.
- Choose appropriate diagnostic aids to chart a patient’s caries and restorative findings.
- Assess a patient’s oral hygiene through completion of a patient hygiene performance (PHP) index.
- Assess a patient’s general and oral health status at subsequent appointments using the appropriate diagnostic aids.
- Construct all patient records and clinical forms promptly, accurately, and legibly.
- Obtain acceptable X-Rays/images.
- Interpret dental X-Rays/images in terms of diagnostic quality and findings.
