Objectives:

1. Develop test taking strategies for the dental hygiene board exams.
2. Construct dental hygiene board exam questions.
3. Assess objective and subjective patient findings to formulate an evidenced- based, patient-centered dental hygiene diagnosis.
4. Compile intervention strategies that promote and maintain oral health.
5. Take part in mock board exams.

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the systematic methodology of care.

Objectives:

1. Discuss the proper use of armamentarium and equipment for providing care to all ASA patient levels.
2. Discuss successful patient dental management techniques for diverse patient populations.
3. Assess dental hygiene treatment plans for the prevention and or treatment of oral diseases.
4. Assess the need for adjunctive topic chemotherapeutic and controlled released agents.
5. Assess the need for initial and supportive periodontal therapies.
6. Assess the need for pain and anxiety management strategies.

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to discuss the general characteristics of dental practice acts.

Objectives:

1. Discuss the supervision levels of the dental hygienist as defined in the Michigan Dental Practice Act.
2. Compare the supervision levels of the dental hygienist as defined in the Michigan Dental Practice Act to other States.
3. Discuss the dental hygiene license application process in the State of Michigan.
4. Discuss how ethical theories affect ethical decision-making.

Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to apply the principles of data collection.

Objectives:

1. Construct comprehensive medical history documents based on appropriate follow-up questions and medical references.
2. Assess a patient’s assessments for contraindications in dental hygiene care.
3. Analyze treatment modifications based on contraindications.
4. Choose the correct diagnostic aids to determine and record the vital signs of a patient.
5. Choose the correct technique to perform an extraoral and an intraoral examination.
6. Construct documentation of clinical findings using appropriate descriptive terminology.
7. Formulate the care level of a patient based on assessment data.
8. Construct a dental hygiene treatment plan based on patient needs.
9. Assess a patient’s periodontal health.
10. Choose the appropriate diagnostic aids to chart a patient’s periodontal findings.
11. Choose the appropriate diagnostic aids to chart a patient’s supra and subgingival calculus.
12. Choose appropriate diagnostic aids to chart a patient’s caries and restorative findings.
13. Assess a patient’s oral hygiene through completion of a patient hygiene performance (PHP) index.
14. Assess a patient’s general and oral health status at subsequent appointments using the appropriate diagnostic aids.
15. Construct all patient records and clinical forms promptly, accurately, and legibly.
16. Obtain acceptable X-Rays/images.
17. Interpret dental X-Rays/images in terms of diagnostic quality and findings.
