DNHY 2010 - General & Oral Pathology

Credit Hours: 3.00

Objectives:

1. Explain the following terms: pathology, disease, etiology, pathogenesis, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, and prognosis.
2. Summarize the categories of disease.
3. Compare terminology describing the course of a disease.
4. Apply appropriate terminology to describe the clinical and/or radiographic findings associated with pathological conditions affecting the oral region.

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to assess soft tissue structures and landmarks of the oral cavity.

Objectives:

1. Compare normal and abnormal appearances of soft tissue structures and landmarks.
2. Compare normal and abnormal appearances of soft tissue structures and landmarks of the periodontium.
3. Compare normal and abnormal appearances of the bony structures and landmarks of the maxilla and mandible.

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to compare the underlying tissue responses involved in diseases to their clinical manifestations.

Objectives:

1. Compare the following host responses to injury: developmental anomalies, atrophy, degeneration, necrosis, hypertrophy, hyperplasia, metaplasia, neoplasia, circulatory disturbances, and inflammation.
2. Compare the vascular and cellular responses in acute inflammation to the cardinal signs and to the formation of the inflammatory exudate.
3. Distinguish between acute inflammation and chronic inflammation.
4. Compare regeneration and repair.
5. Distinguish between immunopathologic mechanisms for hypersensitivity reactions, immunodeficiencies, and autoimmune diseases.
6. Discuss theoretical and clinical aspects of neoplasia and the clinical classification of neoplastic diseases.

Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to assess common oral pathological conditions.

Objectives:

1. Explain pathologic conditions affecting the teeth.
2. Explain the etiology, clinical features, and treatment of developmental anomalies affecting oral and para-oral structures.
3. Compare the common cysts, odontogenic tumors, and nonneoplastic conditions of bone.
4. Compare the common oral lesions.
