DNHY 2012 - Community Dental Hygiene

Credit Hours: 3.00


Prerequisites: Admission into the Dental Hygiene Program; DNHY 1310, DNHY 1312, DNHY 1314 , and DNHY 1315  all with grade C or better

Corequisites: DNHY 2010 , DNHY 2014 , and DNHY 2015  

This course will provide the student with knowledge regarding the foundation of community dentistry and its role in society. Students will explore the primary fields involved in assessing and improving the public’s dental health, including epidemiology and biostatistics. In addition, students will gain experience in evaluating scholarly dental literature.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to discuss multifaceted types of public health.

Objectives:

  1. Compare public health and dental public health.
  2. Compare dental public health and private dental care.
  3. Compare private dental hygiene practice with public dental hygiene practice.

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to design a community dental health program.

Objectives:

  1. Choose services that promote oral health and prevention of oral disease.
  2. Plan, implement, and evaluate community-based oral health programs. 
  3. Discuss making decisions based on accepted scientific principles. 
  4. Discuss problem solving skills.
  5. Discuss specific learning theory models related to a target population.  
  6. Discuss current infection prevention and control resources in community-focused health care settings. 

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to choose evidence-based literature.

Objectives:

  1. Discuss current epidemiologic concepts.
  2. Discuss current biostatistical concepts.
  3. Discuss dental indices utilized to assess target populations.
  4. Assess the credibility and potential hazards of dental products and techniques.
  5. Discuss ways to contribute to the knowledge base of dental hygiene.

Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to formulate effective communication.

Objectives:

  1. Formulate preventive counseling and health education to diverse populations.
  2. Elaborate on the need for patient advocacy.
  3. Construct written communication to allied health professionals.
