DNHY 2024 - Dental Hygiene Clinic Theory IV

Credit Hours: 1.00

Prerequisites: Admission into the Dental Hygiene Program; DNHY 2010, DNHY 2012, DNHY 2014, and DNHY 2015 all with grade C or better

Corequisites: PHIL 2100, DNHY 2020, DNHY 2022, and DNHY 2025

This course continues to advance the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective foundations of dental hygiene theory and practice. Students will be exposed to increasingly complex patient cases including topics involving general pathology, oral pathology, special needs patients, community dental health, and legal and ethical issues in the dental office. The dental hygienist’s ethical role in life-long learning will be emphasized. Additionally, board requirements will be discussed in preparation for the written and clinical boards.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to explain the dental hygiene board exams necessary to complete to obtain licensure.

Objectives:

Identify patient criteria for the clinical board exam.
Explain the application process for the written and clinical board exams.
Explain the application process for state licensure.

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to discuss the purpose of life-long learning in a professional career.

Objectives:

Summarize professionalism and lifelong learning through continued enhancement of professional portfolio.
Develop reflection and self-evaluation skills at an introductory level and understand their importance in the lifelong learning process.

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to identify legal and ethical issues occurring in the dental office.

Objectives:

Explain the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
Identify the covered entities of HIPAA.
Explain the Code of Ethics for Dental Hygienists.

Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to identify educational strategies for specific patient case studies.

Objectives:

Identify educational strategies for pediatric patients.
Identify educational strategies for geriatric patients.
Identify educational strategies for special needs patients.
Identify educational strategies for adolescent patients.
Identify patient referral needs.

Outcome 5: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to use effective communication techniques.

Objectives:

Use effective oral communication skills.
Use effective written skills.
Use effective listening skills .
Verbally summarize clinical findings from patient assessments.
Create dental and medical referrals.
