DNHY 2015 - Clinical Dental Hygiene III

Credit Hours: 4.00


Prerequisites: Admission into the Dental Hygiene Program; DNHY 1310 , DNHY 1312 , DNHY 1314 , and DNHY 1315  all with grade C or better

Corequisites: DNHY 2010 , DNHY 2012 , and DNHY 2014  

This course will expand upon the application of knowledge and clinical skills learned and lead further toward the objectives of the dental hygiene process of care in clinical practice.  Students will continue to develop their clinical skills by providing preventative, educational, and therapeutic services, as well as applying techniques and skills to identify and ease pain and anxiety, to clinical patients in a supervised dental setting.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate proper infection prevention and control protocols.

Objectives:

  1. Select the proper infection prevention and control for a dental context.
  2. Demonstrate proper handwashing technique.
  3. Demonstrate use of proper PPE necessary for treatment procedures.
  4. Demonstrate proper PPE donning technique.
  5. Demonstrate proper PPE doffing technique.
  6. Demonstrate proper method of operatory disinfection.
  7. Demonstrate applying operatory barriers.
  8. Demonstrate instrument disinfection and sterilization.

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to perform common patient assessments.

Objectives:

  1. Perform an oral-facial exam.
  2. Perform a gingival exam.
  3. Perform a periodontal exam.
  4. Perform obtaining a patient’s occlusion.
  5. Perform obtaining a patient’s blood pressure.
  6. Perform obtaining a patient’s pulse.
  7. Perform obtaining a patient’s respiration.
  8. Perform obtaining a patient’s temperature.

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to interpret common patient assessments.

Objectives:

  1. Interpret oral-facial exam findings.
  2. Interpret gingival exam findings.
  3. Interpret periodontal exam findings.
  4. Determine a patient’s occlusion.
  5. Interpret a patient’s blood pressure reading.
  6. Interpret a patient’s pulse rate.
  7. Interpret a patient’s respiration rate.
  8. Interpret a patient’s temperature.
  9. Interpret a patient’s risk assessments.
  10. Interpret a patient’s needs assessments.

Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to document dental hygiene care.

Objectives:

  1. Document the oral-facial exam.
  2. Document the gingival exam.
  3. Document the periodontal exam.
  4. Document the occlusion.
  5. Document blood pressure.
  6. Document pulse rate.
  7. Document respiration rate.
  8. Document temperature.
  9. Document the risk assessment.
  10. Document the needs assessment.
     

Outcome 5: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to select the most effective instrumentation technique for patient context. 

Objectives:

  1. Assess the patient context.
  2. Utilize the modified pen grasp.
  3. Utilize intra- and extraoral fulcrum techniques.
  4. Utilize proper blade adaptation techniques.
  5. Utilize the basic instrument stroke directions.
  6. Utilize instruments for removal of biofilm.
  7. Utilize instruments for removal of supragingival calculus.
  8. Utilize instruments for removal of subgingival calculus.
  9. Utilize proper polishing techniques.

Outcome 6: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to apply instrumentation techniques on clinical patients.

Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate proper instrumentation selection based on patient needs.
  2. Demonstrate proper instrumentation based on instrument selection.
  3. Demonstrate proper adaptation of selected instrument.
  4. Demonstrate proper fulcruming for selected working area.
  5. Demonstrate proper scaling stroke for calculus removal.
  6. Demonstrate proper exploratory stroke for calculus detection.

Outcome 7: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to select proper operator positioning and the range of working positions for the dental hygienist.

Objectives:

  1. Assess working quadrant of the mouth.
  2. Select the correct position based on patient quadrant.
  3. Adjust patient chair based on quadrant.
  4. Demonstrate the range of positions for the clinician.
  5. Demonstrate the neutral working position.
  6. Demonstrate the range of lighting positions.

Outcome 8: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to determine a patient’s dental hygiene process of care.

Objectives:

  1. Interpret a patient’s medical, dental, and social histories.
  2. Interpret clinical findings from patient assessments.
  3. Interpret a patient’s recare/maintenance sequence based on clinical findings and evaluation.
  4. Interpret individual patient goals.
  5. Interpret interventions and outcomes to meet patients’ goals.

Outcome 9: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to use effective communication skills.

Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate use effective oral communication skills.
  2. Demonstrate use effective written skills.
  3. Demonstrate effective listening skills.
  4. Verbally summarize clinical findings from patient assessments.
  5. Create dental and medical patient referrals.

Outcome 10: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to summarize the concepts related to ensuring confidentiality and privacy of patient information.

Objectives:

  1. Explain the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
  2. Explain the entities HIPAA applies to.
  3. Explain the HIPAA Privacy Rule.
  4. Explain the HIPAA Security Rule.

Outcome 11: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to summarize the importance of a safe working environment.

Objectives:

  1. Explain common medical emergencies that occur in the dental practice.
  2. Explain prevention and/or management methods for common medical emergencies.
  3. Explain what health conditions, significant risk factors or risk indicators may impact the delivery of patient care and services.
