DNHY 2014 - Dental Hygiene Clinic Theory III

Credit Hours: 2.00


Prerequisites: Admission into the Dental Hygiene Program; DNHY 1310 , DNHY 1312 , DNHY 1314 , and DNHY 1315  all with grade C or better

Corequisites: DNHY 2010 , DNHY 2012 , and DNHY 2015  

This course continues to advance the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective foundations of dental hygiene theory and practice. Students will be exposed to increasingly complex patient cases including topics involving nutritional assessment and counseling, dental anxiety, pain management during and after dental care, biomaterials in the dental practice, advanced instrumentation techniques and instruments. Special emphasis will be placed upon developing individualized risk assessment and case management skills.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to recommend oral hygiene strategies for diverse populations.

Objectives:

  1. Recommend oral hygiene strategies for special needs patients.
  2. Recommend oral hygiene strategies for pediatric patients.
  3. Recommend oral hygiene strategies for adolescent patients.
  4. Recommend oral hygiene strategies for periodontal patients.
  5. Recommend oral hygiene strategies for geriatric patients.

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to interpret factors used to support patient adherence to disease prevention and maintenance strategies.

Objectives:

  1. Assess a patient’s homecare.
  2. Prioritize a patient’s homecare needs.
  3. Assess a patient’s periodontal health.
  4. Interpret assessment findings to patients.
  5. Assess a patient’s nutrition deficiencies.
  6. Interpret nutritional assessments to patients.  
  7. Appraise a patient’s risk assessments. 
  8. Interpret risk assessments to a patient.

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to propose a dental hygiene care plan to promote patient health and wellness.

Objectives:

  1. Assess an individual patient’s dental hygiene diagnosis.
  2. Assess an individual patient’s dental hygiene prognosis.
  3. Create a periodontal case study based on a clinic patient. 
  4. Discuss the appropriate utilization of advanced clinical instruments.  
  5. Discuss the various advanced clinical instrumentation techniques.

Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to use effective communication skills.

Objectives:

  1. Conduct an oral presentation utilizing evidence-based literature.  
  2. Construct a case study based on a clinic patient.
  3. Develop dental and medical patient referrals.

Outcome 5: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to practice self-reflection and evaluation.

  1. Articulate the importance of self-reflection and evaluation.
  2. Explain the purpose of self-reflection.
  3. Explain the purpose of self-evaluation.
  4. Explain the importance of lifelong learning.
