Objectives:

1. Demonstrate proper handwashing technique. 
2. Demonstrate use of proper PPE necessary for dental hygiene treatment procedures.
3. Demonstrate proper PPE donning technique.
4. Demonstrate proper PPE doffing technique.
5. Demonstrate the proper method of operatory disinfection.
6. Demonstrate applying operatory barriers.
7. Demonstrate instrument disinfection and sterilization.
8. Demonstrate use of proper PPE for disinfection and sterilization

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to use basic instrumentation techniques.

Objectives:

1. Identify the modified pen grasp.
2. Identify intraoral fulcrum techniques.
3. Identify the working-end of various dental hygiene instruments.
4. Identify proper blade adaptation.
5. Identify the three basic instrument stroke directions.
6. Identify instruments for removal of biofilm.
7. Identify instruments for removal of supragingival calculus.
8. Identify instruments for removal of subgingival calculus.
9. Identify the technique of rubber cup prophylaxis.

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the range of working positions for the dental hygienist.

Objectives:

1. Demonstrate common patient positions in the dental chair.
2. Demonstrate common operator positions.
3. Demonstrate common lighting positions.
4. Demonstrate the scope of ergonomic dental hygiene.

Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to construct an individualized patient dental hygiene process of care.

Objectives:

1. Interpret a patient’s relevant background information.
2. Summarize clinical findings from patient assessments.
3. Summarize the appropriate recare/maintenance sequence based on clinical findings and evaluation. 
4. Explain the importance of establishing patient goals.
5. Identify interventions and outcomes to meet patient goals.
6. Create a patient’s risk assessment.
7. Create a patient’s needs assessment.
8. Create dental hygiene process of care.

Outcome 5: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to use effective communication skills.

2. Perform a gingival exam.
3. Perform a periodontal exam.
4. Perform obtaining a patient’s occlusion.
5. Perform obtaining a patient’s blood pressure.
6. Perform obtaining a patient’s pulse.
7. Perform obtaining a patient’s respiration.
8. Perform obtaining a patient’s temperature.

Outcome 7: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to apply instrumentation techniques on clinical patients.

Objectives:

1. Demonstrate proper instrumentation selection based on patient needs.
2. Demonstrate proper instrumentation based on instrument selection.
3. Demonstrate proper adaptation of selected instrument.
4. Demonstrate proper fulcruming for selected working area.
5. Demonstrate proper scaling stroke for calculus removal.
6. Demonstrate proper exploratory stroke for calculus detection.

Outcome 8: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to document dental hygiene care.

1. Explain the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
2. Explain the entities HIPAA applies to.
3. Explain the HIPAA Privacy Rule.
4. Explain the HIPAA Security Rule.

Outcome 10: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to summarize the importance of a safe working environment.

Objectives:

1. Explain common medical emergencies that occur in the dental practice.
2. Explain methods to prevent and/or manage common medical emergencies. 
3. Explain what health conditions, significant risk factors or risk indicators may impact the delivery of patient care and services.
