DNHY 1115 - Preclinical Dental Hygiene & Theory

Credit Hours: 4.00


Prerequisites: Admission into the Dental Hygiene Program; ENGL 1180  or ENGL 1210 , BIOL 2710 , BIOL 2400  or BIOL 2730 , PSYC 1010 CHEM 1050 , and SOCY 1010  all with a grade of C or better

Corequisites: DNHY 1110 , DNHY 1112 , and DNHY 1114  

This course initiates the foundational theoretical knowledge of clinical dental hygiene concepts and includes clinical  experiences of dental hygiene procedures for performing dental hygiene care. Theoretical and clinical concepts introduced include clinical policy/procedure, maintaining a safe and aseptic work environment, equipment maintenance, patient assessment instruments and techniques, scaling instruments and techniques, stain removal equipment and techniques, documentation, and evidence-based dental hygiene concepts.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to explain infection prevention and control in dentistry. 

Objectives:

  1. Explain the four principles of infection control.
  2. Explain the personal protective equipment (PPE) necessary for dental hygiene treatment procedures.
  3. Explain methods of disinfection.
  4. Explain the various methods of sterilization.
  5. Explain the various methods of instrument sterilization.
  6. Explain the various dental equipment maintenance procedures.

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to explain the general components of dental hygiene instruments.

Objectives:

  1. Identify design characteristics of universal curets.
  2. Identify design characteristics of sickle scalers.
  3. Identify design characteristics of Gracey curets.
  4. Identify the types of dental mirrors.
  5. Identify the various periodontal probe designs.
  6. Identify the various dental explorers.
  7. Explain the functions of periodontal probes.
  8. Explain the functions of the various dental explorers.

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to explain the concepts of collecting a patient’s relevant background information.

Objectives:

  1. Summarize the concepts of collecting a patient’s relevant background information.
  2. List the steps in collecting a patient’s medical history.
  3. List the steps in collecting a patient’s dental history.
  4. List the steps in collecting a patient’s social history.

Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to summarize common patient assessments in dentistry.

  2. List the steps in performing a gingival exam.
  3. List the steps in performing a periodontal exam.
  4. List the steps in collecting a patient’s occlusion.
  5. List the steps in obtaining a patient’s blood pressure.
  6. List the steps in obtaining a patient’s pulse.
  7. List the steps in obtaining a patient’s respiration.
  8. List the steps in obtaining a patient’s temperature.
  9. List the steps in collecting a patient’s risk assessment.

  3. Name the two components of HIPAA.
  4. Define the HIPAA Privacy Rule.
  5. Define the HIPAA Security Rule.

Outcome 9: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to explain planning patient care.

Objectives:

  1. Identify the four steps in planning patient care.
  2. Explain the importance of clinical assessment findings in developing the patient care plan.
  3. Define dental hygiene diagnosis.
  4. Define dental hygiene prognosis.
