DNHY 1214 - Dental Hygiene Clinic Theory I

Credit Hours: 2.00


Prerequisites: Admission into the Dental Hygiene Program; DNHY 1110 , DNHY 1112 , DNHY 1114 , and DNHY 1115  all with a grade of C or better

Corequisites: DNHY 1210 , DNHY 1212 , and DNHY 1215  

This course continues to advance the dental hygiene theory, radiographic, and clinical concepts of the previous semester. Students will interact with case studies involving the following: infection control, PPE, radiography and radiologic principles, patient and professional communication, oral hygiene education products and strategies, recall/recare, and dental referrals.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to summarize the infectious disease process.

Objectives:

  1. Explain the chain of events required for the spread of infectious disease.
  2. Explain tthe common methods of cross-contamination.
  3. Explain common transmissible diseasees that may pose a risk to patients and dental healthcare personnel.

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to summarize infection prevention.

Objectives:

  1. Explain the four principles of infection control.
  2. Explain the PPE necessary for dental hygiene treatment procedures.
  3. Explain the methods of disinfection.
  4. Explain the methods of instrument sterilization. 
  5. Explain common dental equipment maintenance procedures. 

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to summarize the proper use of specific dental hygiene instruments.

Objectives:

  1. Explain the proper use of universal curets.
  2. Identify the proper use of sickle scalers.
  3. Identify the proper use of Gracey curets.
  4. Identify the proper use of dental mirrors.
  5. Identify the proper use of periodontal probes.
  6. Identify the proper use of dental explorers.

Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to summarize the significance of obtaining a patient’s relevant background information.

Objectives:

  1. Explain the relationship between oral conditions and a patient’s general health.
  2. Explain how dental procedures may complicate existing physiologic conditions.
  3. Explain how general health factors influence response to treatment.
  4. Explain why the medical history must be updated continually.

Outcome 5: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the common patient assessments in dentistry.

Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate the steps in performing an oral-facial exam.
  2. Demonstrate the steps in performing a gingival exam.
  3. Demonstrate the steps in performing a periodontal exam.
  4. Demonstrate the steps in collecting patient’s occlusion.
  5. Demonstrate the steps in obtaining a patient’s blood pressure.
  6. Demonstrate the steps in obtaining a patient’s pulse.
  7. Demonstrate the steps in obtaining a patient’s respiration.
  8. Demonstrate the steps in obtaining a patient’s temperature.
  9. Demonstrate the steps in collecting a patient’s risk assessments.
  10. Demonstrate the steps in collecting a patient’s needs assessments.

Outcome 6: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the key concepts for documenting dental hygiene care.

Objectives:

  1. Document a patient’s oral-facial exam.
  2. Document a patient’s gingival exam.
  3. Document a patient’s periodontal exam.
  4. Document a patient’s occlusion.
  5. Document a patient’s blood pressure.
  6. Document a patient’s pulse rate.
  7. Document a patient’s respiration rate.
  8. Document a patient’s temperature.
  9. Document a patient’s risk assessment.
  10. Document a patient’s needs assessment.

Outcome 7: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to summarize the concepts related to ensuring confidentiality and privacy of patient information.

Objectives:

  1. Explain the purpose of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
  2. Identify the entities HIPAA applies to.
  3. Identify the two components of HIPAA.
  4. Explain the HIPAA Privacy Rule.
  5. Explain the HIPAA Security Rule.

Outcome 8: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to develop a patient care plan.

Objectives:

  1. Explain the four steps in planning patient care.
  2. Explain the importance of clinical assessment findings in developing a patient care plan.
  3. Explain the dental hygiene diagnosis.
  4. Explain the dental hygiene prognosis.
  5. Assess a patient’s relevant background information.
  6. Assess a patient’s intra-and extraoral assesments.
  7. Draft a patient care plan.
