Criminal Justice with Basic Police Academy, AAS


The Criminal Justice with Police Academy program prepares students for entry‑level positions in agencies identified with the criminal justice system in the United States as well as offers opportunities to current practitioners for improvement of their skills, knowledge, and abilities. Students will develop or improve skills and knowledge of criminal law, current issues in policing, evidence and criminal procedures and investigation as well as other facets of law enforcement.

Program Description:

The Criminal Justice with Police Academy program prepares students for entry‑level positions in agencies identified with the criminal justice system in the United States as well as offers opportunities to current practitioners for improvement of their skills, knowledge, and abilities. Students will develop or improve skills and knowledge of criminal law, current issues in policing, evidence and criminal procedures and investigation as well as other facets of law enforcement. 

Program Outcomes:

Upon completion of this program, the student will be able to:

  1. Explain mechanics of criminal procedure as applied to the area of search and seizure.
  2. Identify legal regulations pertaining to the interviewing process.
  3. Demonstrate the proper method for collecting crime scene evidence.
  4. Define profiling as it applies to law enforcement.
  5. Identify the methodology used in creating a criminal profile
  6. Identify social issues that are influencing today’s law enforcement community.
  7. Identify the components of an effective law enforcement agency in America.
  8. Explain the National Incident Management based on the criteria provided by the Department of Homeland Security.

Requirements & Specific Information:

The Macomb Police Academy course (CRIM 2500) is an accredited program through the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES). A required application and orientation process must be completed before enrollment in the police academy.  Please note that MCOLES requires all applicants to have proof of passing both the MCOLES written and physical fitness pre-employment tests to be admitted to the academy.  Students must have a grade of “C” (2.0) or better to enroll and pass a background check and interview.  During the Police Academy, students must average 70% or better on all examinations to continue throughout the academy and graduate.  Upon graduation, students are eligible to take the MCOLES Licensing Examination.  Passing this examination is a requirement to become a licensed police officer in Michigan.  

Completion of CRIM 2500 does not guarantee (Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) certification.   Licensing as a law enforcement officer in Michigan must be approved through MCOLES requirements and based on passing the licensing examination.
