Program Description:
The Chemistry program is designed to provide students with the basic competencies, knowledge, and skills essential to transfer to a baccalaureate degree program in Chemistry.
Program Outcomes:
Upon completion of this program, the student will be able to:
1. Explain the theory of stoichiometry and be able to solve stoichiometric problems.
2. Express and apply the rules of nomenclature of molecular and ionic compounds.
3. Recognize electronic structure of atoms and predict bonding, intermolecular forces and molecular geometry.
4. Describe the theory of equilibrium of chemical reactions and solve equilibrium problems.
5. Explain the theory of acids and bases and solve neutralization reaction problems.
6. Explain the laws of thermodynamics and explain how they relate to chemical systems.
7. Illustrate, classify and describe the structure, function and reactivity of organic compounds and their functional groups.
8. Describe and write out the mechanism by which common organic reactions take place.
9. Demonstrate common inorganic and organic laboratory techniques.
Career Opportunities:
Transfer Pathways:
Students intending to transfer and complete a bachelor’s degree need to make early decisions concerning an academic major and a transfer destination. Statistics show that students who make these decisions early are more likely to persist to graduation than their undecided counterparts. Students planning to transfer credits earned at Macomb are strongly urged to see a counselor or academic advisor as early as possible in their college careers.
