DLAS-8000 Foundations of Dental Assisting

Corequisites WKSP 8026 , DLAS 8001 , DLAS 8002
This comprehensive introduction to the role of the dental assistant prepares you as a member of the Dental Healthcare Team. Topics include the history of dental assisting and education, dental specialties, dental instruments, chairside skills, dental office emergencies, nutrition, oral pathology, and employment skills. The lecture portion of this course is presented in Modules using Canvas. The laboratory portion is face-to-face instruction in the dental clinic on campus. Students will roleplay being the operator, assistant, and patient. Textbook required.

Learning Outcomes

provide instruction in various dental tray set ups
to prepare proper instrument transfers, operatory preparation maintaining proper infection control
current principles of effective chairside assisting for general and dental specialty procedures
to prepare students to handle medical emergencies in a dental office

Activities/Resources
Activities include partnering with classmate and completing various tray set ups, suctioning, proper oral rinsing, transferring instruments

Evaluation
Students will confidentially evaluate this course by completing the Student Evaluation of Class form distributed at the last class session.

Successful Completion
The instructor will evaluate the student’s skills learned using attendance, participation, feedback, testing where appropriate, and projects completed.

85 % attendance is required; 100% attendance is recommended, as no special arrangements will be made for missing class.

% = 54.4 hours.

Upon successful completion, this course will appear on the student’s Macomb Community College non-credit transcript.
