HLTH-8103A Medical Coding II

Prerequisites CSFT-8063B  or equivalent, HLTH-8010A , and WKSP-8000  
Prepare for the nationally recognized Certified Professional Coding (CPC) exam. Understand the guidelines of Evaluation and Management codes, learn the basics of Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) coding: Level I-CPT, Level II-National codes for medical services rendered in medical offices and hospital settings. Use the proper modifiers and apply medical necessity criteria to assign diagnostic and procedure codes appropriate for medical insurance billing. Web-based learning will enhance classroom lectures. Students can access Canvas at My Macomb. Text required.

Learning Outcomes
  1. ​Apply critical thinking skills to interpret medical information.
  2. Identify accurate procedure codes for medical coding.
  3. Learn to navigate the format of the CPT and HCPCS coding manuals.
  4. Learn to use knowledge of anatomy and pathophysiology, coding guidelines, and parenthetical notes when assigning codes.
  5. Explain the uses of coding symbols and conventions when assigning codes.
  6. Apply coding knowledge to assign codes for E & M, surgical, and diagnostic services and supplies for patients.
  7. Students will prepare to sit for the Certified Professional Coded (CPC) exam.

The grading for this course uses the following percentage weights: Attendance: 10%; Textbook Assignments: 10%; Quizzes: 50%; Final Exam: 30%.

Evaluation
Students will confidentially evaluate this course by completing the Student Evaluation of Class form distributed at the last class session.

Successful Completion
The number of contact hours for this class is 56. The requirement to pass the class is 70%.  Exercise assignments and quizzes will be given weekly. The lowest quiz score will be dropped. Attendance is necessary for success in this course.
