HLTH-8001C Phlebotomy

Gain knowledge and skills to work as a phlebotomist in medical facilities. Learn beginning to advanced phlebotomy, while obtaining laboratory practice. Enroll in internship. Text required.

Learning Outcomes
Examine the healthcare delivery system including inpatient and outpatient settins, applying the phlebotomist’s role as a member of the healthcare team.

  1. Describe the organizational structure and departments of the clinical laboratory.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of infection control, universal precautions, and safety issues in a medical setting including the clinical laboratory.
  3. Confirm basic understanding of the anatomy and physiology of body systems, common medical terminology and anatomic terminology relating major areas of clinical laboratory testing.
  4. Recognize the functions of the major constituents of blood and differentiate between serum and plasma.
  5. Identify the properties of arterial blood, venous, and capillary blood and the difference in collection methods.
  6. Explore the importance of pre-analytical factors involving specimen collection, including specimen integrity and the legal/ethical implications of such factors including patient/sample identification.
  7. Demonstrate knowledge of collection equipment, various types of additives used, special precaution necessary and substances that can interfere in clinical analysis of blood constituents.
  8. Demonstrate proper techniques, identify potential sites, and identify possible complications when performing venipuncture or capillary puncture.
  9. Evaluate laboratory requisitions, special collection procedures, specimen transport, and specimen processing.
  10. Relate quality assurance programs in healthcare and its relationship to phlebotomists.
  11. Interpret basic concepts of communication, cultural awareness, personal and patient interaction, customer service, stress management, professional behavior and legal implications of this work environment.
  12. Explain instructions for proper collection and preservation of urine specimens, sputum, and stools.
  13. Summarize in chronological order the steps necessary to perform an arterial, venipuncture, and capillary puncture following standard operating procedures.
  14. Demonstrate efficiency in performing, recording, and determining acceptable criteria in quality control.

Activities/Resources
Participation in class discussion, videos and homework assignments, practice phlebotomy skills on the training arm as well as each other. Should a needle stick injury occur, report it immediately to the instructor. It is the responsibility of the students to seek medical treatment, to be tested and to follow up at their own expense, without any obligation from the college.

Evaluation
Students will confidentially evaluate this course by completing the Student Evaluation of Class form distributed at the last class session.

Successful Completion
The instructor will evaluate the student’s skills learned using attendance, participation, feedback, testing where appropriate, and projects completed. 100% attendance is required; students must complete exams and homework at a level of 79% and 100% on competencies. Upon successful completion, this class will appear on the student’s Macomb Community College non-credit transcript.
