MAST 1611 - Laboratory Procedures & Phlebotomy for the Medical Office Credit Hours: 4.00 Prerequisites: MAST 1240 , MAST 1811 , MAST 1150 , and MAST 2301 all with grade C or better

This course provides students with the knowledge and practical application of routine laboratory procedures performed in a medical office. Topics include: hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, immunology, and microbiology testing, as well as laboratory safety procedures, quality assurance, and quality control procedures. This course introduces students to the basic skills of phlebotomy. Students learn proper technique for physicians’ offices and outpatient clinics. Topics include point of care testing, venipuncture, blood collection, equipment, order of draw, specimen handling, and legal issues.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to apply to laboratory safety procedures required by OSHA.
Objectives:
- Recognize safety regulations for chemical, biological and electrical hazards
- Describe the information that a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) must include.
- Demonstrate proper handling of laboratory specimens
- Recognize laboratory safety equipment and supplies
- Demonstrate the proper procedures for reporting and documenting a laboratory accident
- Demonstrate the proper cleanup and proper disposal of a chemical and blood spill
Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to describe CLIA waived testing.
Objectives:
- Identify CLIA waived tests associated with common diseases
- Obtain specimens and perform:
- CLIA waived hematology test
- CLIA waived chemistry test
- CLIA waived urinalysis
- CLIA waived immunology test
- CLIA waived microbiology test
Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to instruct a patient for a procedure or diagnostic test.

- Explain a Clean Catch Mid-Stream Urine collection
- Explain a 24-hour Urine Collection Technique
Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to describe the venipuncture techniques including blood collection equipment, additives, and order of draw.
Objectives:
- List the equipment and supplies needed to collect blood by venipuncture.
- List antiseptics and disinfectants.
- Explain the purpose of using a tourniquet for venipuncture.
- Explain the evacuated tube system.
- Identify the general categories of additives used in blood collection
- List the various additives within each category
- Describe how each additive works
- Describe the color-coding used to identify the presence or absence of additives in blood collection tubes
- Explain why the “Order of draw” for collecting multiple tubes is important.
Outcome 5: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to perform a venipuncture technique.

- Describe the proper procedure for collecting specimens from adults, infants, and children.
Outcome 8: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the proper handling and processing of laboratory blood specimens.
Objectives:
- Process the laboratory requisitions
- Show awareness of the patient’s concerns related to the procedure being performed.
- Identify the patient utilizing two patient identifiers.
Outcome 9: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate proper safety procedures.
Objectives:
- Utilize Protective Personal Equipment (PPE), required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
- Utilize engineered safety devices
- State safety rules to follow when working in the laboratory or in patient care areas.
- Discuss examples of blood-borne pathogens and describe their means of transmission in a healthcare setting
- Identify safety techniques that can be used in responding to accidental exposure to:
- Blood
- Needle sticks
- Chemicals
Outcome 10: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to outline quality assurance and legal issues.
Objectives:
- Recognize the legal implications associated with phlebotomy in the healthcare environment.
- Describe the components of a quality assurance (QA) program
- Differentiate quality control (QC) from QA.
- Identify proper procedures for errors: improper technique, mislabeling, incorrect patient, and/or incorrect order of draw.
- Report adverse reactions to blood draw such as patient injury, needle stick injuries, and/or loss of consciousness.
