DNHY 1314 - Dental Hygiene Clinic Theory II

Credit Hours: 2.00

Prerequisites: Admission into the Dental Hygiene Program; DNHY 1210, DNHY 1212, DNHY 1214, and DNHY 1215 all with grade C or better

Corequisites: BIOL 1400, DNHY 1310, DNHY 1312, and DNHY 1315

This course continues to advance the dental hygiene theory, radiographic, and clinical concepts of the previous semester. Students will interact with case studies involving the following: pharmacology and dental care, advanced radiograph interpretation, interprofessional communication, oral hygiene strategies for special needs patients, periodontal disease, periodontal treatment therapies, periodontal maintenance, and periodontal dental referrals.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to evaluate the necessity of infection prevention and control procedures.

Objectives:

Determine the PPE necessary for dental hygiene treatment procedures.
Assess the proper method of operatory disinfection.
Asess the proper method of instrument sterilization.
Assess proper dental equipment maintenance procedures.

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to select the proper dental hygiene instruments.

Objectives:

Select the proper examination instruments.
Select the proper instruments to remove biofilm.
Select the proper instruments to remove supracalculus.
Select the proper instruments to remove subgingival calculus.

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to analyze a patient’s relevant background.

Objectives:

Articulate relationships between oral conditions and a patient’s general health.
Articulate specific dental procedures that may complicate existing physiologic conditions.
Articulate general health factors that influence response to treatment.

Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to analyze the findings of common patient assessments.

Objectives:

Conduct an oral-facial exam.
Conduct a gingival exam.
Conduct a periodontal exam.
Conduct an occlusion exam.
Obtain a patient’s blood pressure.
Obtain a patient’s pulse.
Identify the steps in obtaining a patient’s respiration.
Identify the steps in obtaining a patient’s temperature.
Identify the steps in collecting a patient’s risk assessments.
Identify the steps in collecting a patient’s needs assessments.

Outcome 5: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the correct documentation of patient care.

Demonstrate documentation of the oral-facial exam.
Demonstrate documentation of the gingival exam.
Demonstrate documentation of the periodontal exam.
Demonstrate documentation of occlusion.
Demonstrate documentation of blood pressure.
Demonstrate documentation of pulse rate.

Summarize the four steps in planning patient care.
Examine a patient’s dental hygiene diagnosis.

Examine the alignment of a patient care plan analysis.

Outcome 7: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to analyze oral hygiene strategies for specific patients.

Objectives:

Examine the alignment of an oral hygiene strategy for a special needs patient.
Summarize an oral hygiene strategy for a pediatric patient.
Summarize an oral hygiene strategy for an adolescent patient.
Summarize an oral hygiene strategy for a periodontal patient.
Summarize an oral hygiene strategy for a geriatric patient.
