Program Description:

The dental hygiene curriculum is designed to prepare students for licensure as registered dental hygienists. Dental Hygiene and General Education courses are reinforced by directed clinical experiences. Students must pass each course and related clinical competencies with a C or better.
Program Outcomes:
Upon completion of this program, the student will be able to:
1. Demonstrate competent communication skills to successfully interact with diverse populations.
2. Show cultural sensitivty to diverse populations.
3. Show ethical standards consistent with the American Dental Hygienists’ Association Code of Ethics; the State and Federal laws that govern the practice of dental hygiene.
4. Discuss emerging trends in delivering evidence-based dental hygiene care.
5. Analyze patient oral and health risk factors to disease.
6. Develop comprehensive patient oral health care strategies promoting disease prevention, health maintenance, and improved quality of life.
7. Construct a community oral health program.
8. Demonstrate self-evaluation as an individual and dental professional, in the pursuit of life-long learning.
Requirements & Specific Information:
Additional expenses to be met by the student are (1) a health history and physical examiniation including testing for tuberculosis and other communicable diseases, (2) uniforms, (3) instrument kits/supplies, (4) Loupes, (5) licensure/board exam fees, (6) Student Professional Organization Dues, Dental Hygiene Association, (7) Typodont lease, (8) Health Insurance.
Students must achieve a grade of “C” or better for all the Core and the General Education courses which are prerequisites and/or considered a part of the program. Other General Education courses which are not part of the program, but are required for the degree, require only a passing grade.
The Michigan Board of Dentistry may deny an RDH license to an applicant who has been convicted of a crime or is addicted to drugs or alcohol.
