Program Description:
The Education: Early Childhood Studies courses at Macomb focus on development (social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and language) and the principles of developmentally appropriate practice (DAP) as they relate to academic disciplines and planning authentic learning opportunities and environments for children ages zero through eight years old. Emphasis is placed on authentic observation and assessment, curriculum planning, components of quality care, building positive reciprocal relationships with families and maintaining a commitment to professionalism. Accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) in 2014, Macomb Community College’s Education: Early Childhood program prepares students to work with diverse populations in a variety of roles in early care and education settings. Students participate in field observations and interactions throughout all levels of courses concluding with their final semester placement teaching in a practicum setting. Macomb’s foundational undergraduate courses articulate and transfer to many colleges and universities with bachelor’s degree programs in child development, early childhood education, or elementary teaching certification. Students may be eligible for financial aid and or the Michigan T.E.A.C.H. scholarship.
