The Associate of Arts in English program is designed to prepare students to transfer to a Bachelor’s degree program in English or Education. It can also serve as a complementary degree to a variety of other Bachelor’s degrees, programs, or professional fields that require written and oral communication, critical thinking, rhetorical and analytical skills, and research abilities. This degree can be customized to emphasize literature or writing. English majors often pursue careers in teaching, publishing, journalism, public relations, business, information technology, and law.

Program Description:

The Associate of Arts in English program is designed to prepare students to transfer to a Bachelor’s degree program in English or Education. Program Outcomes:

Upon completion of this program, the student will be able to:

Writing Track:

Write focused, organized, well-developed documents using coherent paragraphs that support a clear thesis statement or controlling idea.

  1. Compose writing that informs, persuades, or entertains a variety of audiences through effective choices of content, structure, and tone, using the conventions of standard American English.
  2. Interpret a variety of written and visual texts using critical reading and thinking skills, such as analysis, synthesis, and/or evaluation.
  3. Employ academic research skills to locate a variety of credible popular and scholarly resources.
  4. Integrate relevant resources into a research paper using MLA/APA style documentation.

Literature Track:

  1. Identify a variety of authors, literary genres, literary techniques, and literary devices.
  2. Interpret a variety of literary works and genres from different periods in American, British, and/or world literature by analyzing major literary elements.
  3. Respond critically to literary and expository texts by analyzing the historical or cultural conditions within which they are produced.
  4. Write interpretations of literary texts using clear and coherent prose and relevant textual evidence.
  5. Write argumentative research papers that demonstrate the conventions of literary analysis and criticism and incorporate scholarly sources according to MLA guidelines.
