Program Description:

The EMT student will learn the role of the Emergency Medical Technician that administers Basic Life Support and takes over care from the Medical First Responders. After completing these courses, the student will be able to take the National Registry licensing exam. The student will also obtain the knowledge and skills to staff the sophisticated Advanced Life Support Units and assume care for the patient using appropriate medications and therapy to stabilize the victim of accidents or sudden illness prior to arrival at the hospital.

Program Outcomes:

Upon completion of this program, the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate an effective and naturalized patient assessment for determining an appropriate treatment plan for a medical or trauma patient.

2. Demonstrate the naturalization of techniques for medication and fluid administration

3. Identify the procedures for safe and effective operation of the EKG monitor, transcutaneous pacer and defibrillator.

4. Select the appropriate treatment for the cardiac patient based on the current advanced cardiac life support algorithms.

5. Explain the indications, contraindication, correct dosage, and route of administration for medications commonly prescribed in the pre-hospital setting.

6. Explain the National Incident Management System and the role of the All Hazard Approach in emergency response planning based on the criteria provided by the Department of Homeland Security.

Requirements & Specific Information:

Additional expenses to be met by the student are (1) a health history and physical examination including testing for tuberculosis and immunizations for Tetanus-Diphtheria, Hepatitis B, Varicella, Mumps, Rubella and Rubeola; (2) uniforms; (3) hospitalization insurance as neither the clinical facilities nor the college insures the student against accidents or illness; (4) flu shot; and (5) drug screen and (6) criminal background check.

Students must achieve grade “C” or better, or grade “Pass” (if the course is a Pass/Fail course), for all the Core courses in this program. If a grade lower than C, or Pass (if the course is a Pass/Fail course), is earned in any core course in this program, the student will be required to repeat all of the core courses and earn a minimum grade of C, or Pass (if the course is a Pass/Fail course), to be eligible to take the national examination. Students receiving financial aid or veteran/military education benefits should contact the respective office for information on the possible impact to their aid/benefit.
