VETT 1031 - Comparative Anatomy and Physiology for Veterinary Technicians Laboratory

Credit Hours: 1.00


Prerequisites: Admission into the Veterinary Technician Program

(formerly VETT 1030)

VETT 1031 instructs veterinary technician students in the anatomy and physiology of common domestic species, including dogs, cats, horses, pigs, cattle, and small ruminants. Application strategies include the use of skeletal and anatomically correct models of common domestic species, dissection of an animal cadaver, and the dissection of an animal eye, heart, and brain. Students will compare anatomical structures of live animals with those identified in the cadaver. Students will compare and contrast anatomical and physiological species differences among the common domestic species studied.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to apply proper veterinary medical terminology as it relates to the anatomy and physiology of common domestic species. 

Objectives: 

  1. Use appropriate terminology in the description of all anatomical structures and physiological functions. 
  2. Use appropriate terminology relative to an animal’s position. 

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to identify the major organ system structures in the body of common domestic species from the musculoskeletal, nervous, lymphatic, hematopoietic, immune, endocrine, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, urinary, and reproductive systems and the sensory organs. 

Objectives: 

  1. Visually identify the major organ systems and structures in the body on organ specimens or anatomically correct models. 
  2. Describe the gross anatomic structure of the major organ systems in the body. 
  3. Discuss differences in anatomical structures among common domestic species. 

Outcome 3:  Upon completion of this course, students will be able to compare and contrast the function of organs found in the musculoskeletal, nervous, lymphatic, hematopoietic, immune, endocrine, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, urinary, and reproductive systems and the sensory organs. 

Objectives:  

  1. Describe the physiologic functions of the organ systems of common domestic species.  
  2. Describe the immune system’s response to vaccination.
