NURS 2346 - Childhood Nursing A

Credit Hours: 2.00


Prerequisites: Admission into the Nursing Program; NURS 2255  and NURS 2265  all with grade C or better, or grade Pass (if the course is a Pass/Fail course)

Corequisites: NURS 2375  

(formerly NURS 2345)

This theory course focuses on planning safe, culturally-diverse, patient- and family-centered nursing care for children experiencing problems related to fluid and electrolyte imbalances, impaired immune responses, and alterations in the respiratory, genitourinary, integumentary, and gastrointestinal systems. This course emphasizes using evidence-based practice and quality improvement initiatives to develop critical thinking skills in caring for pediatric patients and their families. In addition, the course covers growth and development of toddler, preschool, and school-aged children.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Course Outcomes:

Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to connect normal growth and developmental concepts for the pediatric client.

Objectives:

  1. Identify concepts of physical growth, development, and developmental challenges for the toddler, preschooler, and school-aged clients.
  2. Compare concepts of physical growth, development, and developmental challenges for the toddler, preschooler, and school-aged clients.


Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to connect appropriate health promotion strategies for the pediatric client.

Objectives:

  1. Identify concepts of health promotion for toddler, preschooler, and school-aged clients including sleep, nutrition, safety, play, and dental health.
  2. Compare concepts of health promotion for toddler, preschooler, and school-aged clients including sleep, nutrition, safety, play, and dental health.


Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to analyze critical components of evidence-based nursing practice for the pediatric client with acute and chronic illnesses.

Objectives:

  1. Associate the pediatric clients’ physiological cues with dysfunction of genitourinary, respiratory, immunologic, gastrointestinal, and integumentary systems.
  2. Implement nursing interventions based on current evidence for pediatric clients with cues with dysfunction of genitourinary, respiratory, immunologic, gastrointestinal, and integumentary systems.


Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to analyze safety strategies that minimize risk of harm to the pediatric client with acute and chronic illnesses.

Objectives:

  1. Identify safety strategies that minimize risk of harm to the pediatric client with dysfunction of the genitourinary, respiratory, immunologic, gastrointestinal, and integumentary systems.
  2. Determine best practice nursing standards in providing pediatric care for clients with dysfunction of the genitourinary, respiratory, immunologic, gastrointestinal, and integumentary systems.


Outcome 5: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to indicate signs and symptoms of child abuse.

Objectives:

  1. Identify signs and symptoms of physical or sexual child abuse and child neglect.
  2. Identify appropriate nursing interventions when child abuse is suspected.
