NURS 1446 - Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing A

Prerequisites: Admission into the Nursing Program; NURS 1355  and NURS 1365  all with grade C or better, or grade Pass (if the course is a Pass/Fail course)

Corequisites: NURS 1475  

(formerly NURS 1445)

This theory course focuses on planning safe, culturally‑diverse, patient‑centered nursing care for patients experiencing problems related to anxiety, alterations in affect, and alterations in cognition. It emphasizes using evidence‑based practice and quality improvement initiatives to develop critical thinking skills in caring for patients and their families. In addition, the course addresses growth and development of adolescent and young adult patients.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to identify evidence-based clinical practice for psychiatric/mental health care of patients experiencing biological illnesses.

Objectives:

  1. Identify the role of evidence-based nursing care for culturally diverse patients experiencing psychiatric/mental health diagnoses such as anxiety, alterations in affect, and alterations in cognition.
  2. Identify evidence-based safety interventions for the care of psychiatric/mental health patients experiencing diagnoses such anxiety, alterations in affect, and alterations in cognition.

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to apply evidence-based clinical practice for psychiatric/mental health care of patients experiencing biological illnesses.

Objectives:

  1. Identify subjective and objective data related to psychiatric/mental health diagnoses such as anxiety, alterations in affect, and alterations in cognition.
  2. Use subjective and objective data to apply evidence-based psychiatric/mental health care for patients experiencing diagnoses such as anxiety, alterations in affect, and alterations in cognition.

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to apply therapeutic communication for psychiatric/mental health care of patients experiencing biological illnesses.

Objectives:

  1. Identify appropriate therapeutic communication techniques for individual diagnoses of patients experiencing psychiatric/mental health illnesses.
  2. Summarize therapeutic communication for psychiatric/mental health care for patients with conditions such as anxiety, alterations in affect, and alterations in cognition.
  3. Avoid non-therapeutic communication while using communication strategies for psychiatric/mental health patients.

Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to apply evidence-based safety care for psychiatric/mental health care of patients experiencing biological illnesses.

Objectives:

  1. Identify safety needs of patients experiencing psychiatric/mental health diagnoses sch as anxiety, alterations in affect, and alterations in cognition.
  2. Explain evidence-based safety care for psychiatric/mental health care of patients experiencing biological illnesses.
