Course Outcomes:

Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to analyze age-related physiological changes and common health conditions affecting the older adult, including sensory (ear and eye) conditions.

Objectives:

  1. Identify common diseases, sensory impairments, chronic conditions, and associated risk factors affecting older adults.
  2. Describe evidence-based strategies to promote safe, person-centered care for older adults by integrating knowledge of age-related physiological changes, common health conditions, and sensory alterations.
  3. Explain common ear and eye conditions in older adults and discuss their impact on safety, communication, and quality of life

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to explain foundational pain management concepts, including principles of safe medication administration and treatment symptom management.

Objectives:

  1. Integrate evidence-based pain management strategies, including pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic approaches while recognizing opioid safety considerations.
  2. Explain common side effects associated with pain management therapies and safe medication administration and discuss strategies to minimize adverse outcomes and promote patient safety.

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to apply evidence-based interventions to maintain mobility, prevent complications of immobility, and promote functional independence.

Objectives:

  1. Identify risk factors and complications of immobility and summarize interventions that support mobility and reduce adverse outcomes.
  2. Analyze nursing interventions that reduce fall risk, pressure injuries, sensory impairment complications, and immobility-related adverse effects.

Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to integrate culturally sensitive communication techniques and evidence-based comfort measures to support patients and families during end-of-life care, promoting dignity, personal values, and individualized decision-making.

Objectives:

  1. Explain culturally sensitive communication strategies and evidence-based comfort measures that promote dignity, respect personal values, and support individualized decision-making during end-of-life care.
  2. Identify prevalent end-of-life symptoms and summarize interventions that enhance comfort and respect patient values.

Outcome 5: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to identify evidence-based nursing interventions and safety strategies used to promote safe, quality care for oncology patients.

Objectives:

  1. Explain evidence-based strategies for early detection and prevention of cancer, including patient education and screening guidelines, to promote safe and quality oncology care.
  2. Describe common oncology treatment modalities and discuss nursing interventions that ensure safety, manage side effects, and support quality care throughout the treatment process.
