NURS 1155 - Fundamentals of Nursing Practice 1

Credit Hours: 1.50


Prerequisites: Admission into the Nursing Program; ENGL 1181  or ENGL 1211 BIOL 2400  or BIOL 2730 , BIOL 1400 , BIOL 2710 , and HHSC 1040  all with grade C or better

Corequisites: NURS 1145 , NURS 1165 , and NURS 1175  

(replaces but does not equate to NURS 1520)

This theory course focuses on developing the critical thinking skills of the nursing process. It introduces communication and interviewing techniques for data collection, examines the nursing implications for diagnostic studies while planning nursing care, and introduces infectious disease principles. In addition, the course addresses pharmacologic principles and safe medication administration.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Program Outcomes/Student Learning Outcomes:

  1. Upon completion of the Associate Degree in Applied Science Nursing program, students will be able to evaluate the critical components of evidence-based nursing practice.
  2. Upon completion of the Associate Degree of Applied Science in Nursing program, students will be able to evaluate safety strategies that minimize the risk of harm to clients and the healthcare team.

 

Course Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to apply infection control principles in order to create a safe healthcare environment.

Objectives:

  1. Identify the chain of infection and standard and transmission-based precautions.
  2. Explain how infection precautions are used in a safe healthcare environment.


Course Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to identify common diagnostic tests.

Objectives:

  1. Recognize normal results of common diagnostic tests.
  2. Recognize abnormal results of common diagnostic tests.


Course Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to explain how the nursing process serves as a framework for providing safe and effective client care.

Objectives:

  1. Use the nursing process to recognize client needs.
  2. Apply the nursing process to plan safe, appropriate care.


Course Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to explain how clinical judgment serves as a framework for providing safe and effective client care.

Objectives:

  1. Use clinical judgment to recognize client needs.
  2. Apply clinical judgment to plan safe, appropriate care.


Course Outcome 5: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to summarize the role played by evidence-based practice in promoting safety, quality, and effective nursing interventions.

Objectives:

  1. Describe the nurse’s responsibility to use evidence in providing safe and effective care.
  2. Identify the PICOT elements in a scientific journal article.


Course Outcome 6: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to recognize effective therapeutic communication techniques used in building nurse-client relationships.

  1. Identify elements of effective communication techniques.
  2. Identify barriers that interfere with therapeutic interaction.


Course Outcome 7: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to explain the basic principles of pharmacology.

Objectives:

  1. Identify common medication classifications, their basic actions, uses, and side effects.
  2. Describe basic principles of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics.


Course Outcome 8: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to summarize safe medication administration.

Objectives:

  1. Explain the 11 rights of medication administration.
  2. Explain the nurse’s role in promoting medication safety.
