ARTT 1060 - Basic Drawing 1

Credit Hours: 3.00


Prerequisites: None

This course covers basic drawing skills for both commercial and general art and includes introductions to elements of drawing, perspective, and drawing media, such as charcoal, ink, conte crayon, pencil, etc. Composition with still life, figure, and landscape will be included. Required for pre-art majors.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to use drawing vocabulary.

Objectives:

  1. Learn drawing terminology.
  2. Keep a sketchbook/journal of drawing terms and practice.
  3. Identify different drawing media.

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will measure objects through sighting.

Objectives:

  1. Measure an object using sighting techniques.
  2. Apply sighting measurements to original drawings.
  3. Use measuring to determine scale in drawings.
  4. Use measuring to determine proportion in drawings.

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to create several fundamental charcoal drawings.

Objectives:

  1. Discuss the benefits of using charcoal.
  2. Discuss the limitations of using charcoal.
  3. Create a significant charcoal drawing from observation.
  4. Identify a charcoal drawing.

Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to create a fundamental graphite drawing.

Objectives:

  1. Discuss the benefits of using graphite.
  2. Discuss the limitations of using graphite.
  3. Create a significant graphite drawing from observation.
  4. Identify a graphite drawing.

Outcome 5: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to create a fundamental drawing using perspective techniques.

Objectives:

  1. Create a drawing using 1-point perspective.
  2. Create a drawing using 2-point perspective.

Outcome 6: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to create a fundamental composition.

Objectives:

  1. Create a drawing using formal composition techniques.
  2. Create a drawing using informal composition techniques.
  3. Explain how composition is used in fine art.

Outcome 7: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to use rendering to give their drawings depth.

Objectives:

  1. Create several charcoal drawings using cross hatching rendering techniques.
  2. Create several graphite drawings using cross hatching rendering techniques.

Outcome 8: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to summarize the long history of drawing and its relevance in art history.

Objectives:

  1. Identify proper tools for drawing.
  2. Identify significant artists who have used drawing.

Outcome 9: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to properly present artwork.

Objectives:

  1. Present drawings in a professional manner.
  2. Discuss the merit of drawings in front of the class.
  3. Prepare drawings for portfolio review.
  4. Prepare drawings for exhibition.

Outcome 10: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to follow proper studio methodology.

Objectives:

  1. Use appropriate safety standards.
  2. Demonstrate safe work habits.
  3. Use tools and materials properly.
  4. Demonstrate proper shop etiquette.

Outcome 11: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to work from direct observation.

Objectives:

  1. Work directly from a still life in class.
  2. Set up a still life at home to work from.
  3. Identify techniques for drawing from direct observation.
  4. Identify basic proportional techniques for drawing from direct observation.

Outcome 12: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to create drawings on a variety of paper types.

Objectives:

  1. Identify different drawing papers and their uses.
  2. Create a drawing using charcoal paper.
  3. Create a drawing using drawing paper.
  4. Create a drawing using newsprint.
