DLAS-8003 Dental Materials

Prerequisites None
Corequisites WKSP 8026  
An introduction to materials commonly used in the dental setting. Various aspects of the study include the manipulation of materials, procedures for application and the role of the dental assistant as an integral member of the dental healthcare team.  The laboratory sessions focus on techniques of impression fabrication, pouring dental models and manipulation of dental cements and armamentarium used in the dental in-office lab. Students who choose to take this without also taking the Infection Control & Safety in the Dental Workplace will perform lab impressions on a human patient simulator instead of a live patient. Textbook required.

Learning Outcomes
  • students will study and demonstrated the knowledge of all three impression techniques,practice on typodonts as well as on each other when masters the typodonts 
  • student prepare models using all gypsum products, trim for study models 
  • student will fabricated bleach trays, custom trays 
  • learn and master mixing IRM as base, glass ionomer as permanent cement, zinc phosphate, polycarboxylate as permanent cement 
  • mix composite resin 
  • mix amalgam in amalgamator 

Topics
  • preparing impressions, pour ups and trim for study models 
  • mix all temporary and permanent cements 
  • mix composite and amalgam as restorative material 

Activities/Resources
  • students will master taking preliminary impressions on typodont and take 3 sets of preliminary impressions on various student partners 
  • student will pour each impression with stone and plaster 
  • student will fabricate bleach trays from these pour ups 
  • students will mix cements and fill provisionals  


Evaluation
Students will confidentially evaluate this course by completing the Student Evaluation of Class form distributed at the last class session. 

Successful Completion
The instructor will evaluate the student’s skills learned using attendance, participation, feedback, testing where appropriate, and projects completed.  

85 % attendance is required; 100% attendance is recommended, as no special arrangements will be made for missing class.  

% = 37.4 hours. 

Upon successful completion, this course will appear on the student’s Macomb Community College non-credit transcript.
