CRTR-8017 Court Reporting Skill 3 Prerequisites None Continue the process of speed building. Speed levels are 180-225 w.p.m., and literary, jury charge, and Q & A tests to be passed with 95% accuracy. Internship required.

Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion:
- Students will write unfamiliar two-voice dictation at 200 and 225 wpm, jury charge at 200 wpm, and literary at 180 wpm and transcribe all tests with 95% accuracy.
- Students will pass three tests in each category at above-specified speeds with 95% accuracy.
- Students will transcribe a simulated RPR skills test within the allotted test transcription guidelines.
- Students will provide practice logs or worksheets through ev360 every week verifying practice time.
- Students will be called upon to demonstrate the ability to read back from notes by locating portions to be read as directed by instructor.
- Students must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the use of correct spelling, punctuation, and proofreading skills.
- Students will be expected to participate in two-voice/multi-voice sessions, mock trials, and/or mock depositions.
- Students will learn how to conduct themselves in court reporting situations and demonstrate knowledge of courtroom and deposition etiquette.
- Students will demonstrate knowledge of administering an oath or affirmation.
- Students will be able to identify appropriate reference sources used in transcript preparation.
- Students will produce a 40-page transcript with 95% accuracy including title page, table of contents page, and certification page.
- Students are expected to apply all rules of conflict-free and real time writing principles.
- Students will be proficient in the use of current software technology by preparing all tests and homework assignments through the use of CAT software.
Topics Realtime Procedures will include, but are not limited to:
- Effective study habits and methods.
- Courtroom and deposition vocabulary.
- Rules and concepts of real time writing.
- International, national, and local current events.
- Role of the reporter in trials, deposition, administrative hearings, and other judicial proceedings.
- Marking and handling of exhibits.
- Indexing and archiving of steno notes, paper and electronic.
- Reporting techniques.
- Transcript preparation and production.
- The profession of court reporting and related job opportunities.
- How to report and transcribe voir dire of the jury and witnesses and polling of a jury.
- Proofreading skills.
- Ethics.
- Knowledge of and involvement in professional associations.
- The importance of continuing education.
- Professional image and dress.
- Resumes.
Activities/Resources
- Access to professional organizations such as NCRA and MAPCR.
- EV360 dictation and testing website.
- Participation in mock trials
- Two-voice/multi-voice dictation classes.
- A prerequisite of 180 wpm is required to begin an internship program. Students must show evidence of 40 verified hours with a working court reporter of actual writing time during internship training which must be divided between courtroom, deposition, or conference time. Verification of attendance must be signed and dated by the official reporter with a contact number included. A minimum of 10 pages of transcript for each proceeding must be submitted before receiving credit for internship.
Evaluation Students will confidentially evaluate the course by completing the Student Evaluation of Class form distributed at the last class session.
Successful Completion Grading: All speed tests must be passed with a 95% accuracy rate and are graded according to
the NCRA Minimum Standards and Requirements “What Is an Error?”
Students can begin their internship once a 180 Q&A at 180 is passed. (please see internship info sheet)
