CRTR-8016 Court Reporting Theory 2

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  1. Identify the keyboard of the shorthand machine.
  2. Demonstrate level-appropriate skills in the use of the shorthand machine.
  3. Learn and apply all theory principles of real time writing from Chapters 1-40 in the StenEd Theory textbook.
  4. Become proficient at reading back and translating steno notes with a 95% accuracy rate.

Topics
Topics will include, but are not limited to:

  1. Effective study habits.
  2. Vocabulary.
  3. Courtroom and deposition etiquette.
  4. Rules of conflict-free writing.
  5. Importance of arbitraries and phrases.
  6. Weekly submittal of practice log sheets for accountability of practice hours.
  7. Classroom participation including required read back of steno notes.
  8. Completion of all homework assignments.

Evaluation
Students will confidentially evaluate the course by completing the Student Evaluation of Class form distributed at the last class session.

Successful Completion
Instructors will assess student based on class performance, completion of required assignments, verbal communication and class participation, attendance, and the success of all tests.  All speed tests must be passed with a 95% accuracy rate and are graded according to the National Court Reporting Association Minimum Standards and Requirements “What Is an Error?”  Practice logs must be submitted weekly to instructor in order to receive course credit.
