Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Transcribe and pass with 95% accuracy a test at 160 wpm in the categories of literary, jury charge, and Q & A.
- Transcribe and pass with 95% accuracy a test at 180 wpm in the categories of jury charge and Q & A.
- Produce a transcript with 95% accuracy.
- Apply all rules of conflict-free/real time writing.
- Demonstrate knowledge of courtroom and deposition etiquette.
- Utilize current software applications and technology in the classroom.
Topics Realtime Procedures will include, but are not limited to:
- Effective study habits and methods.
- Courtroom and deposition vocabulary.
- Rules and concepts of real time writing.
- International, national, and local current events.
- Role of the reporter in trials, depositions, administrative hearings, and other judicial proceedings.
- Marking and handling of exhibits.
- Indexing and archiving of steno notes, paper and electronic.
- Reporting techniques.
- Transcript preparation and production.
- The profession of court reporting and related job opportunities.
- How to report and transcribe voir dire of the jury and witnesses and the polling of a jury.
- Proofreading skills.
- Ethics.
- Knowledge and involvement in professional associations.
- The importance of continuing education.
- Professional image and dress.
- Resumes.

- Access to professional organizations such as NCRA and MAPCR.

- Mock trials.
- Two-voice/multi-voice dictation sessions.
- Extensive read back at varying speeds and varying syllabic density.
- Open discussion of all court reporting topics.
Evaluation Students will confidentially evaluate the course by completing the Student Evaluation of Class form distributed at the last class session.
Successful Completion Grading: All speed tests must be passed with a 95% accuracy rate and are graded according to
the NCRA Minimum Standards and Requirements “What Is an Error?”
Students can begin their internship once a 180 Q&A at 180 is passed. (please see internship info sheet)
