PHOT-8006C Principles of Photography

Prerequisites None
It is strongly recommended that students register for Digital Fundamentals before taking the other photography courses in this program. Improve film and digital images. Understand the fundamentals of composition, light, and movement and become comfortable using your camera menus and controls. Develop your own style and discover why some photographers are consistently better than others.

Learning Outcomes
  1. Discover the different formats of cameras and the advantages of each.
  2. Learn how to meter with and use the student’s own camera; acquire a thorough understanding of its features and controls.
  3. Learn the importance of depth of field and how to manage it for greater subject impact.
  4. Achieve a working knowledge of how to use light to achieve the desired effect and the different ways to exploit that light.
  5. Learn the important rules of successful composition.

Topics
  1. Photographic equipment including film and digital camera basics.
  2. How different cameras operate.
  3. Different lenses: manual focus, auto focus, telephoto, wide angle, macro.
  4. Photographing movement (macro).
  5. ISO and film speed.
  6. Depth of field, proper exposure, rules of light (artificial and natural), light meters, composition, texture, form, and color.

Evaluation
Students will confidentially evaluate this course by completing the Student Evaluation of Class form distributed at the last class session.

Successful Completion
The instructor will evaluate the student’s skills learned using attendance, participation, feedback, testing where appropriate, and projects completed. 100% attendance is recommended and a minimum of 12 hours is required.  No special arrangements will be made for missing class.  Upon successful completion, this course will appear on the student’s Macomb Community College non-credit transcript.
