PHOT-8032A Creative Lighting for Photography Prerequisites None This course is intended as a basic introduction to the principles of lighting. Students will discover what factors influence lighting and will have the opportunity to explore the effects of lighting on a composition. We will learn how to create a mood, the most advantageous way to present your subject, how to add lighting, and how to make the best use of existing light.

Learning Outcomes
- Learn how light is metered and how to alter the way your camera “sees” the light.
- Learn how to take advantage of existing light to improve the photograph.
- Become familiar with the camera’s internal flash and external flash.
- Learn the different ways to light a subject with constant studio lights.
- Become familiar with the use of some light diffusers and filters.
Topics
- How your camera “sees” light through the use of ISO, exposure compensation, and white balance.
- How to make the best use of existing light.
- How and when to add flash to a photograph.
- How to make the most of constant studio light.

- Hands-on exercises using students’ own cameras and photography equipment.
Evaluation Students will confidentially evaluate this course by completing the Student Evaluation of Class form distributed at the last class session.
Successful Completion Instructor will evaluate student’s skills learned using attendance, participation, feedback, testing where appropriate, and projects completed. 75% attendance is required; 100% attendance is recommended as no special arrangements will be made for missing class. 75% attendance = 11.25 hours. Upon successful completion, this course will appear on the student’s Macomb Community College non-credit transcript.
