CRIM 2400 - Criminal Law

This course covers elements of substantive criminal law relevant to attaining the preservation and protection of life and property and includes the structure, definitions, and most applicable pertinent sections of criminal statutes.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to identify the basic concepts of criminal law (MCOLES I.B.1.1).

Objectives:

  1. Summarize the process of a criminal case in Michigan.
  2. Differentiate between a misdemeanor and a felony.
  3. Examine the constitution and its application to criminal law (MCOLES I.A.1.1.).

Outcome 2:  Upon completion of this course, students will be able to analyze aspects of crimes against persons.

Objectives:

  1. Identify crimes against persons (MCOLES I.B.1.3).
  2. Determine the appropriate elements for assaultive crimes.
  3. Compare and contrast different homicidal crimes.

Outcome 3:  Upon completion of this course, students will be able to analyze aspects of victimless crimes.

Objectives:

  1. Identify contraband and regulatory crimes (MCOLES I.B.3.2).
  2. Identify public order crimes (MCOLES I.B.4.2).
  3. Describe problems of drug enforcement laws.

Outcome 4:  Upon completion of this course, students will be able to analyze aspects of property crimes.

Objectives:

  1. Identify crimes against property (MCOLES I.B.2.2).
  2. Distinguish between various theft crimes.
  3. Identify the difference between common law burglary and home invasion.
