ARCH 1035 - Interior Design

Credit Hours: 2.00


Prerequisites: ARCH 1010 

This course will introduce students to the interior design profession as it relates to architecture and the overall built interior environment.  They will learn how to improve the interior of a building through materials, functional spaces, people’s behavior in the space, historical precedence, accessory planning, construction methods, and installation methods.   An interior designer works on new and old structures, develops plans and researches, coordinates, and manages projects to enhance spaces to be aesthetically pleasing and healthier for the people who use it.  Various career opportunities include many aspects of architectural design such as commercial, residential, bathroom, kitchen, furniture, and lighting designers.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to identify the significance of the history of interior design.

Objectives:

  1. Recognize historical precedence specific to interior design.
  2. Investigate elements of architecture from the past that shape current interior design directions.

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to identify the professional practice of interior design.

Objectives:

  1. Recognize design practices with an interior design office or personal practice.
  2. Investigate interior design practices within related industries.

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to articulate the dynamics of interior spaces.

Objectives:

  1. Create projects introducing color, line, shape, texture, and pattern within a room.
  2. Identify the balance between positive and negative space within a room.

Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to describe relationships apparent within a space.

Objectives:

  1. Design an interior space with form, space, function, and natural light aspects.
  2. Develop a plan for the best use of ergonomics with a space.

Outcome 5: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to define different accessory planning layouts.

Objectives:

  1. Experiment with selection and arrangement of furniture and floor designs.
  2. Examine daylighting with window and lighting elements.

Outcome 6: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to identify uses of materials within an interior space.

Objectives:

  1. Examine characteristics, properties, and components using various materials.  
  2. Implement design scenarios based on different construction methods.

Outcome 7: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to identify design decisions relating to environmental controls

Objectives:

  1. Illustrate various acoustics, thermal comfort, and indoor air quality.
  2. Examine the impact on human well-being and the sustainable environment.

Outcome 8: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to create a course design portfolio.

Objectives:

  1. Present a collection of drawings created in the course.
  2. Identify the portfolio creation process.
