ATPP 1210 - Drain, Waste & Vent

Credit Hours: 2.00


Prerequisites: None

(formerly ATPP 1110)

This class will cover the basic theory of the drain, waste, and vent systems used in plumbing. Materials for sewer, soil, vent, and waste pipes along with fitting and valve types will be discussed in the course. Additionally, students will practice system sizing calculations and understand the requirements for pitch and drainage. Lastly, students will correctly identify piping and fitting types and how to make connections.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Students will be able to articulate the importance of workplace safety. 

Objectives: 

  1. Describe general safety rules.
  2. Use appropriate personal protective gear (PPE) when preforming a task.
  3. Identify risk potential on a work site.
  4. Understand OSHA’s role in relation to the employer and employee responsibility on the jobsite.

Outcome 2: Students will be able to correctly use basic tools common to drain waste and vent systems. 

Objectives: 

  1. Select the proper tools for a given application.
  2. Have basic knowledge of how to properly use the tool for a task.
  3. Understand cleanup and maintenance procedures for tools used.
  4. Demonstrate proper storage and handling of tools used.

Outcome 3: Students will identify proper installation procedures for piping materials.

Objectives:

  1. Identify proper installation procedures for various piping materials.
  2. Identify proper installation procedures for various valves.
  3. Identify proper installation procedures for common fitting connection types.
  4. Identify proper installation procedures for common trade fixtures.
  5. Identify proper installation procedures for DWV pumps.

Outcome 4: Students will be able correctly use trade math common to the drain waste and vent system.

Objectives:

  1. Use common measuring tools.
  2. Calculate simple mathematical conversions.
  3. Locate measurements on a blueprint.
  4. Generate basic isometric blueprints.
  5. Identify appropriate trade formulas for a given task.

Outcome 5: Students will be able to determine the local code and the jurisdiction having authority.

Objectives:

  1. Identify the need for the state and local code requirements.
  2. Understand the relationship between the state and local code requirements.
  3. Locate the correct code chapter pertaining to a task.
  4. Apply the code ruling pertaining to the project.
