SURG 1200 - Surgical Clinical 1

Credit Hours: 8.00


Prerequisites: Admission into the Surgical Technology Program; ENGL 1181  or ENGL 1210 ; BIOL 2400  or BIOL 2730 ; BIOL 2710 , HHSC 1700 , SURG 1050 , SURG 1060 , and SURG 1070  all with grade C or better, or grade Pass (if the course is a Pass/Fail course); and proof of current AHA/BLS certification

Corequisites: SURG 1055 , SURG 1250 , and SURG 1265  

In this supervised lab and clinical course, students will learn, practice, and perform essential skills required in the surgical setting. Students will demonstrate preoperative operating room preparation, scrubbing, gowning, gloving, set-up of the sterile field, and they will perform the functions of the surgical technologist in the sterile field using aseptic technique in the laboratory setting. Students perform in the role of the scrub and circulator on various surgical procedures. Upon successful completion of pre‑clinical competencies, students are assigned in the hospital setting three days a week to gain clinical experience and acquire course competencies. Students are responsible for their own health insurance and transportation. This course is graded on a pass/fail basis. Students are required to pass this course to progress in the program.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to participate as a member of the surgical team.

Objectives:

  1. Identify types of surgical attire.
  2. Describe purposes of surgical attire.
  3. Identify types of accessory attire.
  4. Discuss restrictions involving surgical attire.
  5. Develop essential skills required of a surgical technologist.
  6. Perform duties of the student scrub surgical technologist.
  7. Demonstrate professional obligations to the patient and surgical team members.
  8. Perform the duties of the assistant circulator.
  9. Demonstrate principles of teamwork in the surgical environment.

Outcome 2:  Upon completion of this course, students will be able to explain various types of equipment used in the operating room.

  1. Identify purposes of the various types of equipment.
  2. Review uses of the various types of equipment.
  3. Describe the perioperative handling of equipment.

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to practice safe patient care.

Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate the key elements related to developing  a surgical conscience.
  2. Articulate OR policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines.
  3. Apply safety measures.
  4. Perform surgical TIME OUT.
  5. Perform surgical counts.
  6. Describe the purpose of surgical counts.
  7. Describe types of documentation of counts used in the OR.
  8. Identify items that must be counted.
  9. Describe methods of counting.
  10. Discuss the frequency and timing of surgical counts.
  11. Explain the intraoperative sequence for completing surgical counts.
  12. Identify when additional counts are necessary.

Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to practice safety techniques in protecting self and other team members.

Objectives:

  1. Explain when to seek help.
  2. Accept responsibility for personal actions.
  3. Apply proper techniques in handling sharps.
  4. Evaluate accountability for ones actions and to others.
  5. Model proper ways to pass various specialty instruments to the surgeon.

  2. Describe terms related to asepsis and sterile technique.
  3. Apply concepts related to asepsis.
  4. Open sterile supplies.
  5. Demonstrate hand wash, scrub, gowning, and gloving.
  6. Perform set-up of the sterile field.
  7. Describe principles associated with establishing the sterile field.
  8. Explain steps for preparing an operating room.
  9. Explain the sequence of opening sterile supplies.
  10. Explain steps for organizing the back table.
  11. Explain steps for organizing the Mayo stand.
  12. Describe final steps required to finish establishing the sterile field.
  13. Analyze special circumstances that require adjusting the normal routine for establishing the sterile field.
  14. Discuss concepts that apply to the maintenance of the sterile field.
  15. Explain duties of the surgical technologist to maintain the sterile field.
  16. Describe special considerations that require the surgical technologist to make adjustments to maintain the sterile field.
  17. Monitor the sterile field.
  18. Evaluate sources of contamination.
  19. Discuss principles and practices of sterile technique.
  20. Describe the characteristics and types of draping materials.
  21. Explain the application of drapes to equipment and furniture.
  22. Explain the selection of drapes and draping sequence related to anatomical regions.
  23. Discuss concepts for the breakdown of the sterile field.
  24. Explain steps that are taken to break down the sterile field.

Outcome 6: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to anticipate the surgeon’s needs during all phases of surgery.

  2. Verify supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure.

Outcome 7: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to create a surgeon’s preference card.

  1. Maintain log cards of surgical procedures performed.
  2. Describe the key elements of a surgeon’s preference card.

Outcome 8: Upon completion of this course students will be able to conform to OR standards, policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Objectives:

  1. Summarize the purpose of documentation.
  2. Interpret OR records, documentation, and other forms.
  3. Describe the documents found in the patients surgical chart.
  4. State the purpose of good communication.
  5. Describe the purpose of informed consent.
  6. Describe types of informed consent.
  7. State the purpose of patient identification.
  8. Describe the patient identification procedure according to the patient situation.
  9. Describe the purpose and sequence of the time-out procedure.
  10. Identify team members who will participate in the time-out procedure.
  11. Identify the time-out components.

Outcome 9: Upon completion of this course students will be able to outline the principles of wound management.

Objectives:

  1. Identify criteria used to select items to provide tissue exposure.
  2. Describe use of sutures and needles for procedures.
