MACA 1410 - Television/Video Studio Production

Credit Hours: 4.00


Prerequisites: None

Lecture and hands‑on experience in live to tape studio programming for television and video productions. Technical principles of studio recording of audio and video programs will be emphasized. Students will perform duties of each position in a studio production team.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to plan, produce, and shoot studio productions.

Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate studio theory and technologies.
  2. Script and storyboard projects in pre and post-production.

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to use multi-camera studio equipment.

  2. Capture video and sound from live multi-camera production.

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate and properly use teleprompter equipment.

Outcome 7: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to produce projects to a variety of media formats and deliverables.

COURSE CONTENT OUTLINE
  1. Introduction, course goals and objectives, grading and attendance policy. Overview of materials and supply list. Lecture: History and Business.
  2. Lecture: Industry Roles production staff, duties, responsibilities of crew and video team will be examined. Ethics in Journalism. Assignment: Gathering current news and research.
  3. Lecture: Assignment: New Research continues. Pre-production planning for your studio shoot. Lecture: Camera operations. Basic controls of camera and audio equipment in studio. Basic lighting for studio and field productions. Balance mix lighting. Assignment: 3News broadcast
  4. Lecture: Non-Linear Editing application, terminology and user interface explored. Backing up and safeguarding your files. Assignment: Use the NLE to edit a specific project.
  5. Working as a crew: Studio work, control room, video switcher, teleprompter, talent, audio monitoring, keying and flow.
  6. Shoot 3 News assignment. As a crew each person will learn the different roles of the studio as we shoot.
  7. Shoot 3 News assignment continues.

  9. Lecture: Public Service Announcements Assignment: PSA pre-production begins
  10. Lecture: Script/plan approval and presentation. Planning the shoot. Managing the shoot.
  11. Lecture: Planning Your Edit. Introduction to editing.
